Peaceful and green, just like the hamlets and villages that occupied the area in the 18th century, the 17th century offers a very pleasant setting for strolling. Even if it does not have any great monument or museum of international fame, this district, very residential, seduces by its academic side but also by its small squares, its churches and its markets. The Ternes district is undoubtedly the most solemn with its large avenues lined with Haussmann buildings and its wide squares. The former gateway to Paris, the Place des Ternes is now decorated with numerous green sheds housing flower merchants. At the end of avenue des Ternes, you can do some shopping in the Palais des Congrès but also visit the Notre-Dame de la Compassion chapel which was built on the site of the accident that cost the life of the Duke of Orléans, Louis-Philippe's eldest son.
Then take boulevard Pereire to get to the Porte de Champerret. This traffic axis has the particularity of having in its centre a wide flowered promenade built on a former railway line. Next to the Champerret gate, discover the amazing Sainte-Odile church. Built between 1935 and 1946, it has a pretty pink sandstone façade and the highest of the Parisian bell towers (72 m). Then head towards the Batignolles district. This ancient hamlet, attached to Paris in 1860 by decision of Napoleon III, has kept its village air with its small squares and gardens.
If you need a break to relax, enjoy the Batignolles Square, a charming English garden, or Martin Luther King Park. The latter, still under development, was to host the athletes' village for the 2012 Olympic Games which were finally held in London ! The square des Épinettes is also ideal to rest in the shade of chestnut trees, lime trees and holm oaks. Then join Dr. Félix Lobligeois for a little shopping or a meal. Calm and pleasant, it will give you the impression of being in the provinces. Finally, discover the pleasant (and renowned) markets in the neighbourhood : the covered market on Lemercier Street, the organic market on des Batignolles Boulevard and the market on de Lévis Street.
