Between sea and mountain, the bay of Agay is a small paradise of the Var belonging to the commune of Saint-Raphaël. With its fine sandy beach and impressive natural scenery, it attracts many visitors. Its name would have originated in the passage of the first Greek sailors, who found in it a shelter for their ships. "Agay" would then come from the Greek "Agathon", which means "good, favorable".
The bay has kept its charm throughout the centuries. At the beginning of the 20th century, Agay already attracted well-to-do tourists and famous personalities. Among them, the writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry stayed there several times and married at the Château d'Agay in 1932 the Salvadorian artist Consuelo Suncin Sandoval. This castle has since disappeared, destroyed in 1944 by the German army. The Fountain of the Little Prince was subsequently built as a tribute to the author.
The massif of Estérel, a volcanic relief that surrounds the bay of Agay, offers a unique landscape, as stunning at its feet as on its summits. The red color of its rocks, due to the presence of rhyolite, and its abundant vegetation contrast with the turquoise blue of the Mediterranean Sea. Circuits have been arranged for the hikers and allow to come to admire an exceptional panorama on its numerous sites.
The Cap Dramont, a protected natural area, is also an essential point of view to contemplate the bay and its surroundings. In particular, he gives access to an ideal view of the Ile d'Or, Hergé's supposed inspiration for the writing of L'Île Noire, the seventh album of the Tintin and Snowy Adventures.
The seaside resort also knows how to make good use of the Mediterranean Sea. Three scuba diving schools allow holidaymakers to discover abundant and unspoiled fauna and sub-aquatic flora. Moreover, the water sports to practice on the bay of Agay are multiple and open to any public.
The reputation of Agay is no longer to be done. The writer Guy de Maupassant even made it a place of his new fantastic On Water, inspired by a cruise of the Mediterranean coasts. This "pretty basin", as he describes it, has become a tourist destination of choice for all those who seek calm and beauty.
