Perched on its rocky ridge at the entrance to the wild Aveyron gorges, Najac, a magnificent medieval town, seems to be frozen in time. Classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France and awarded the "Grands Sites Midi-Pyrénées" label, this town brilliantly combines charm and authenticity. In the heart of the ancient province of Rouergue, the village of Najac is nestled in a quiet and intimate green setting, perfect for a quiet stay away from the crowd. Here, everything seems to be in harmony: along the banks of the Aveyron, which meanders through the town, the visitor discovers panoramas where water, stone and vegetation combine to offer a view worthy of the most beautiful postcards. If there is one emblematic place in the town, it is without doubt its fortress: a huge watchtower perched 200 metres above the Aveyron gorges, it offers visitors breathtaking views from the terraces of its keep. A splendid example of medieval military art, this fortress was built between the 12th and 12th centuries to defend Rouergue, and was the scene of many confrontations during the fight against the Cathars and the Hundred Years War. Partly renovated, it is worth a visit for its unique architecture, and for its incredible view over the Aveyron valley. After this visit, take the time to go back down to the heart of the castle town, built around the fortress on a small hill during the 11th century. Several places in Najac are not to be missed, such as the Place du Faubourg, the monolithic fountain of the Consuls, the Governor's House, the Seneschal's House or the Saint-Barthélémy chapel. From ancient fountains to steep staircases, you will be able to admire magnificent old half-timbered houses, discover the Porte de Pique, the superb district of La Pause, the church of Saint-Jean l'Évangéliste or the Saint-Blaise bridge, classified as a Historic Monument, all of which are inseparable from the history of Najac and will complete your visit.

A dynamic town, Najac is animated throughout the year thanks to a whole host of events around its history and gastronomy. The Salon du Goût, the Médiévales de Najac, the Festival Les Musicales du Rouergue, the night markets, the torchlight guided tours, the Festival en Bastide, the Fête Votive de Saint-Barthélémy, as well as the Festival d'Autan will allow you to immerse yourself in the local folklore! Also, hiking is king in the Najac area: on foot, on horseback or by bike, whether you are a novice or a seasoned walker, you will be able to follow the paths of the Grande Randonnée which criss-cross the area, and the country paths which will lead you to the discovery of the bastides of the region such as Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Villeneuve-d'Aveyron, Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, Rieupeyroux, or La Bastide l'Évêque.
