Between the Petit Lubéron and the Alpilles, on the southern bank of the Durance, lies the picturesque village of Orgon. North of the Bouches-du-Rhône, only 18 kilometres from Saint-Rémy de Provence, Orgon is the ideal place to stop over for a stay to discover the splendours of Provence.
How can you not fall in love with Orgon? An authentic village with an outdated charm, Orgon has preserved many traces of its past, including an important historical heritage. Its castle, in particular, is certainly its most emblematic monument: once the residence of the Knights Templar, it was during the 13th century a real stronghold in the region, alternating between prison and seigneurial residence. Walking through the Savoy district, you can discover the ruins of what was once the castle of the Duke of Guise perched on its rocky spur, as well as the ramparts and fortified gates that surrounded the city. Pass through the Porte de l'Ange (also called Porte de la Durance), the Porte de l'Hortet, and the Porte Sainte Anne, to discover all the secrets of Orgon. Stroll through its long narrow streets dotted with old houses, some of which, truly remarkable, are known for their Renaissance facades and windows. Walk to the church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption (1325), admire its high bell tower dating from 1660, as well as the breathtaking view from its square over the plains of the Durance and the rooftops of the city. Continue your visit towards the Beauregard site, stop at its orientation table which offers from its heights an incomparable panorama on the Lubéron chain, the Alpilles chain, the fortress of Baux-de-Provence and the Durance valley. Follow the Oratories, Chapels, Crosses, Ornithological Route and Stone Trail by foot or bicycle to complete your discovery of the village of Orgon.
Hiking enthusiasts? Between vineyards, olive groves, orchards, thematic trails, walking trails and riverside itineraries, you will have plenty to choose from to marvel at the various colourful panoramas that Orgon has to offer. Take advantage of the wooded foothills of the Alpilles Regional Natural Park for bicycle excursions, and even take your visit to Les Beaux-de-Provence, Fontvieille, Cavaillon or Avignon and Salon-de-Provence, 20 kilometres away. The most daring climbers will attack the most famous sites in the Alpilles, scattered here and there around the village of Orgon, especially in the "Happy Valley" and the "canal sector". Finally, during the hot weather, Lake Lavau to the south of the city will delight holidaymakers who love water sports. In addition to swimming, young and old will be able to enjoy a number of activities, such as water skiing and wake-boarding: advice to amateurs!
