The island of Oleron is a name that makes you dream. The fine sandy beaches, the endless ocean, the green nature... Yes, but not only ! In Château d'Oléron, a town of 4000 inhabitants nestled in the south-east of the island, discover another facet of Oléron. This fortified town has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Its position on the island, facing the mainland, has made it a strategic military defence site over the centuries, resulting in a remarkable architectural heritage. Château d'Oléron is also an oyster farming mecca. A driving activity in the city, it is the ideal place to discover the culture of this unique species and to savour its original taste at restaurant tables.

It is during the 17th century that the present city is born. Its name comes from the ancient village destroyed during the religious wars on which stood the medieval castle of the dukes of Aquitaine. In 1630, an immense citadel was commissioned by Richelieu to replace the castle. In 1688, Vauban, Louis XIV's famous military engineer, noted that the fortifications were not sufficient and gradually extended it by adding horned structures and new towers. The citadel is a magnificent example of the military architecture of this period. Despite some damage caused by air raids during the Second World War, many of its monuments still stand proudly. Don't miss a visit to the majestic Royal Gate or the Dockyard Building, where you'll find exhibits and more.

Oysters are a great tradition at Château d'Oléron. Since its creation in the 19th century, the oyster port has rapidly gained in activity. Today, oyster beds have largely replaced salt marshes. The port is an unmissable place to stroll around the city. Climb up the Chenal d'Ors while admiring its small multicoloured huts. Don't hesitate to stop on the terraces of the restaurants to discover the local flavours.

Atlantic Ocean rhymes with water sports ! Maggy and Didier welcome young and old adventurers to the castle's nautical centre for catamaran, windsurfing and sea kayaking lessons. A garden of the seas awakens toddlers to the joys of boating in a gentle way. Explorers in the making, the scuba diving school is waiting for you ! All levels are welcome. Your baptism will take place safely in the school's ecological pool, a veritable aquarium full of amazing plant and animal species. Once initiated, you will explore natural sites in the open sea such as rocks or underwater canyons or one of the many wrecks lying at the bottom of the ocean.
