Located opposite the Atlantic coast, the island of Oléron belongs to the Charente archipelago. This little corner of paradise renowned for its superb natural spaces and fine sandy beaches attracts many visitors to its historic towns each year. The north of the island is dominated by Saint-Denis-d'Oléron, a small seaside resort of 1300 inhabitants with the charm of an authentic village. The latter have an exotic name that immediately makes you want to travel : we call them the Dyonisians !
Until the 20th century, the commune was very isolated from the rest of the island. Its roads became impassable during the winter. The salt and wine trade nevertheless enabled him to subsist on his needs for centuries. It was not until 1904 that the town was equipped with railways and an all-season road giving it better access to the rest of Oleron. These innovations came at the same time as the sea bathing fashion, and often wealthy tourists began to flock to the island. Beautiful seaside villas appear little by little in Saint-Denis-d'Oléron as well as elegant hotels such as the Moulin de la Galette. And in the city, you can still see traditional houses, with their white facades and their green or blue shutters.
To the north of the commune, the Chassiron site is an essential place for nature lovers. Both wild and majestic, it stretches over imposing cliffs dominated by a lighthouse from 1834. From its heights, an exceptional view over the whole of Oléron, the Ile de Ré and the famous Fort Boyard are revealed to you. Today, the lighthouse houses a museum presenting the life of the Oleronese of yesteryear, mixing period objects, models, films and testimonies. Composed of six exhibition rooms, you will learn all about the history of sailors and traditional fishing as well as the development of agriculture through market gardening and viticulture.
The Atlantic Ocean is renowned as a playground for water sports. In Saint-Denis-d'Oléron, visit the Yacht Club d'Oléron to learn or perfect a wide range of disciplines : catamarans, windsurfing, dinghy, sailing boats, to name but a few. From the age of 5, come and discover the joys of sliding on the waves of Olerona. And for those who want unique sensations, do not hesitate to go to Oléron Kite Surf to discover this sensational discipline. Surfing cousin, kitesurfing makes you evolve on a board towed by a kite. Thrills guaranteed !

Everything is to be visited on the island of Oleron but our favorites are : the little train of St Trojan which brings us to the wild south end of the island, the Port des Salines and Château d'Oléron. a great restaurant in St Denis d'Oléron : the Quai 17 and not to be missed, the aiglade (mussels cooked in pine thorns) at the Testaud's in Dolus, very nice oyster farmers. original dish to discover. And to see for the beauty and freshness: the marsh to the birds in Dolus and the jardi des Boieries in St Pierre d'oleron.

Unfortunately no restaurants because of the health crisis but lots of wonderful places to see. For the restaurants, some make dishes, even menus, to take away : it's good while waiting for the reopening...

Not to be missed: the lighthouse of Chassiron and the citadel of Château d'Oléron which remain open in spite of the confinement, but we regretted not being able to visit the marshes with the birds in Dolus d'Oléron which did not have the authorization to open! (1km and a half of walking in the middle of nature where is the danger ?)

A restaurant (the only one) that allows you to eat an éclade (mussels cooked in a pine needle fire): "Chez Mamelou" (attention: reservation necessary at least 72 hours before). It is located on the oyster road from the town of Château d'Oléron.
