In the south of Finistère, wedged between Loctudy and Combrit, the historic town of Pont-l'Abbé is one of those places full of charm that only Brittany seems to have the secret. Cultural, natural and greedy, this historical, touristic and flowery town will take you on an amazing journey in the heart of the "made-in BZH" folklore.
Capital of the Pays Bigouden, Pont l'Abbé is an authentic destination, with a change of scenery, which honors its Breton traditions while offering its visitors a restful setting that is both dynamic and preserved, perfect for family vacations. With more than 250 shops for barely 8000 inhabitants, this commercial city is full of art galleries and small original stores where you can buy antiques, decorative items, but also beautiful Breton marinières or local delicacies, such as kouign Sall, a salted kouign-amann accompanied by a compote of onions and Breton pâté. Nestled at the bottom of its estuary, Pont-l'Abbé can be visited on foot, along its narrow streets marked by the sweet smell of Breton history. With its magnificent castle, its splendid inhabited bridge from which it takes its name (formerly called "Pont Christ"), its shipowners' residences and its quays that invite you to stroll, this legendary land excels in the art of making hearts beat faster. Its medieval fortress of the 14th century is well worth a visit: with its keep and its cellars of the time, its main building of the 18th century, this castle of the Barons of the Bridge, that is its name, shelters today the Bigouden Museum as well as the town hall of Pont-l'Abbé. From the quays of the port, built with the stones of the old walls that encircled the city, a beautiful viewpoint awaits you on the castle and its keep, but also on the inhabited bridge. Walk also towards the church of Lambour of the XIIIth century, then towards the church Notre-Dame-des-Carmes: vestige of a convent founded in the XIVth century, it astonishes by the beauty of its stained glasses of the XIXth century and for its rose window set in a fine lace of Breton granite. Speaking of lace, Pont-l'Abbé has excelled in the art of embroidery for centuries now; at the bend in an alley, you may be lucky enough to come across a Bigoudène woman wearing a traditional headdress adorned with lace and embroidery of a rare finesse, a real pride of the local heritage.
Looking for fresh air and sea walks? You are definitely in the right place. The green theater of the Saint-Laurent wood on the right bank of the river of Pont-l'Abbé will be perfect for your walks in the green, just like the circuit of the towpath (GR34) which will lead you on nearly 7 kilometers along the river. This river is also a privileged place for fishing, however, if you wish to swim, you will have to go to the nearby seaside resorts of Loctudy and Ile-Tudy: from the beach of Poulluen, the beach of Sables-Blancs or the beach of Langoz, you will be able to bask in the sun, swim or even opt for a wide range of water activities! Sailing, sea excursions, stand-up paddle, catamaran, dinghy, kayak, flyboard, jet-ski, hydrosport and other outings in towed buoys will satisfy the whole family.
