What if you opted for an authentic holiday in the Gard, right next to Alès, in the heart of a region that is as exotic as you could wish for? Go to the small village of Sauve!
Labelled as a village of character, the medieval village of Sauve is located on the banks of the Virdoule, in the Gard department, in the Occitanie region. At the foot of the Cevennes, between land and sea, it is about forty kilometers from Nîmes that this charming village flourishes. Dominated by the Sea of Rocks, Sauve's origins go back a long way, to the Gallo-Roman era when its territory was largely developed, as attested by numerous remains. Labelled Ville et Métiers d'Art, the town is known for its famous micocoulier forks (a Mediterranean plant) and for its cherries, but it also attracts the attention of visitors for the beauty of its medieval heritage of quality. Listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments, the ancient oppidum of Mus is a vast archaeological site, which will allow you to discover many vestiges of the Gallo-Roman period: a must to do with your family to know everything about the history of Sauve and its region! But this place is not the only must-see in Sauve if, like many holidaymakers, you are one of those who love old stones. The House Poch and its superb sculpted lintel, the House of the Bishop, or the Tower of Mole are to be seen. The latter, which was originally a lordly tower of the house of Anduze, was attached in the 13th century by the abbey of the village and was known to be the only water point of the town, when Sauve was under siege. It is undeniable, the medieval period has left its mark on the village forever: Sauve's fountain, the alleys with vaulted passages, the elegant Gothic facades, the fortified gates, but also the Clock Tower surmounted by a wrought iron campanile, the redesigned 19th century church, the town hall and its neo-classical columned portico, the Pont-Vieux of medieval origin, or the Protestant temple and its neo-classical facade, are some of the sites that you cannot miss during your stay.
But if there is one place that conquers the heart of hiking enthusiasts, it is the Mer de Rochers. Revealing the ruins of the Castle of Roquevaire, the Castle of La Roquette or those of the Castellas, this vast chaos of limestone rocks is a particularly singular place. Shaped by the erosion of water, the Sea of Rocks located on the plateau of Coutach offers its visitors incomparable views of rocks with amazing shapes, sometimes even magical, as well as the medieval city of Sauve below. Mountain biking along the Virdoule or towards Nîmes, Anduze, Vézénobres, Aigremont and Alès, visits to art galleries, market strolls, swimming in the river, fishing and outdoor activities for the whole family will complete this stay in Sauve!
