With nearly forty wineries, Ammerschwihr is undoubtedly the ideal destination for wine lovers. Gourmet, sporty and cultural between forest and vines, Ammerschwihr offers an ideal rural setting for a holiday in the countryside.
Between the emblematic Colmar and Kaysersberg, Ammerschwihr is located in the heart of the Haut-Rhin department. Dominated by its high bell tower, this ancient medieval village, watered by the Fecht, the Weiss and the Wallbach, is composed of narrow flowered alleys bordered by splendid Renaissance-style residences, as well as the beautiful ruins of its ancient fortifications. In particular, you can cross the path of the great Tour des Fripons, one of the remains of the town's ramparts, dating back to 1535. Then pass in front of the Stockrunnen fountain, at the foot of the statue of the Wild Man on the Market Square, and continue your visit to Ammerschwihr by walking in front of the ruins of the City Hall destroyed in 1944. The Puits de l'Ours, the Grand'Rue and its old houses, the Tour des Voleurs dite Schelmenturm, the Place des Jeux and its coloured half-timbered houses, the Tour des Bourgeois, the former house of the winegrowers' guild, the Porte Haute (also called the Tour des Cigognes) and finally the Chapelle Saint-Wendelin are the main sites not to be missed when you visit Ammerschwihr.
A little further on, do not hesitate to walk or cycle to Meywihr Castle, built in 1279 in the vineyards of the Vosges mountains. In the municipality, nearly 1200 hectares of mountain forests will be a fabulous playground for hiking enthusiasts: you will find many developed trails, especially through the vineyards, most of which offer magnificent views of the Black Forest and the Alsace Plain. The Alsatian Wine Route is also one of the region's most popular routes, which you should do even if you are not a wine lover, simply to enjoy the uniqueness of the Alsatian countryside.
Finally, when passing through Ammerschwihr, it will be easy for you to get to Colmar (9 kilometres) and Kaysersberg (3 kilometres), but also to Riquewihr, Turckheim and Niedermorschwihr. As for gastronomy, don't miss the Grand Cru Kaefferkopf, pretzels, black forest, Alsatian paschal lamb, eel, Alsatian asparagus, braided brioche, grilled carp, sauerkraut, so emblematic of the region and the famous flammenküche!
