A member of the Villes et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire label since 1987, the former Roman city of Fréjus is a renowned tourist destination, helped for this by its unique historical and natural heritage. From the historic heart to the fine sandy beaches, the city is undergoing a complete transformation from one district to another... a change of scenery is therefore guaranteed!
Fréjus has been able to fully exploit the memories of its ancient past. While not all the ruins that dot the city have been rehabilitated for contemporary use, some of them are in use today, almost two thousand years after their construction. For example, the Roman Amphitheatre, better known as the Arena of Frejus, opens its doors during the summer months for concerts and shows. Built during the 1st century AD, this immense monument welcomed nearly 10,000 spectators, probably for gladiatorial fights. Similarly, the Roman Theatre, built at the same time, has been restored despite the disappearance of the terraces. Its 900 seats now welcome the public for music, dance and theatre performances. In July, the Nuits Auréliennes settle there to the delight of theatre lovers. During a stroll in the heart of the city, it is not uncommon to come face to face with other imposing remains of the Roman period such as the Roman Aqueduct or the Gauls Gate.
The seaside of Fréjus is also to be explored, as its beauty and tranquility blend perfectly with the charm of the historic district, which extends as far as Port-Fréjus. This port, created in 1989, easily combines modernity and memory of the ancient port, which was one of the most important from a military and commercial point of view in the Mediterranean.
For nature lovers, the once volcanic Esterel Massif allows you to discover a green flora while hiking or mountain biking. The François Léotard Nature Base is also a major tourist attraction. This natural area of several hectares is the ideal place for a peaceful walk in the middle of vegetation. It is also a meeting place for sports and leisure activities, where you can enjoy the Mediterranean climate on a magnificent beach of fine sand.
Finally, during the summer period, the amusement parks of Luna Park (night) and Aqualand (close to each other) are open to families and allow them to spend unforgettable days, alternating water games and thrilling rides.
