It is in the Hérault, in the Occitanie region, that the small town of Castries is located. Situated about 20 kilometres from the heart of Montpellier, 12 kilometres from the Etang de l'Or and 20 minutes from the Mediterranean beaches, Castries is the perfect place to put down your suitcases and set off to discover the most beautiful corners of the Montpellier area.
Castries is a journey through the history and culture of the south of France. Situated on an ancient Roman castrum on the Voie Domitienne, at the top of its hill overlooking fertile plains, wild scrublands and dazzling vineyards, Castries enjoys an important heritage, particularly well preserved, which does not fail to evoke its prestigious and opulent past. An unmissable sight: his castle. Aptly nicknamed the "little Versailles of the Languedoc", the Château de Castries will amaze you with the splendour of its French garden and aqueduct, which make its site one of the most important monumental complexes in the whole of Languedoc-Roussillon. Built in 1670 by the architect Paul Riquet, this monumental colossus, 6822 metres long, was once used to supply water to the gardens of the château, at the request of André Le Nôtre, who also designed the gardens of the château de Versailles, those of Chantilly and Vaux-le-Vicomte. But the richness of the heritage of Castries doesn't stop there since during your walks, you will be able to discover the Romanesque style Pont des Tourilles which spans the waters of the Cadoule, but also the 11th century Commanderie des Templiers de Saint-Michel de Bannières (or what remains of it rather), the Pont sur la Cadoule (18th century), the Capelette or even the Mas de Fondepierre whose origins would go back to the Gallo-Roman period. Also take the time to visit the old village of Castries: along its narrow, flowery medieval streets, you will find the old houses of the town, built over old vaulted cellars. Take the direction of the Avenue de la Promenade: as you walk along it, you can discover the arches of the old oil mill, but also the church square, the Coste square, the old market hall and the old Castries.
In Castries, there are many hiking and cycling trails that you can find. Along La Cadoule, around the aqueduct, in the direction of Lunel, Mauguio or Montpellier, you will discover all that makes the splendour of this little corner of paradise. While passing through Montpellier, take the opportunity to push the door of one of the many restaurants in the city to taste the delights of the local gastronomy: pelardons, truffles, Camargue rice, delicate Languedoc wines, bull meat and mussel brasucades will delight young and old alike. And why don't you push your visit a little further towards the sea? The beaches of Palavas-les-Flots are only about 20 minutes from Castries. Perfect for your sandcastle contests as well as for swimming and water activities, they will be the icing on the cake of your holiday under the sun.

Go and see the aqueduct by the hiking trails. It's beautiful. Good bakery in the center, for shopping go to the Leclerc in the town next door. The beach of Petit Travers is superb (20min by car): free parking, beautiful dunes...

For the surroundings : Carnon beach at 20 min . For bike rides : very few bike paths and car traffic (especially trucks) is dangerous for us. Many traffic jams at all hours of the day. But, to finish, a beautiful place to do on foot or by bike: the ponds around Mauguio with many birds (flamingos, terns ...) a few meters from the path.

We found a superb restaurant ("L'Athentic"). We ate a very good beef. Montpellier is not very far away: it is necessary to visit. We also visited Sète, Uzes, Les Saintes Maries de la Mer (to see a bullfight). Castries is a beautiful small town (too bad you can't visit the castle and church).

To recommend: the forest of the commune just next door, crossed by the aqueducts. I was able to do some very pleasant hikes.
