On the edge of the Emerald Coast, between Combourg and Saint-Malo, some twenty kilometres from Dinan, the small village of Le Tronchet has everything to please holidaymakers looking for a stay in the heart of Brittany. Ideally located, about 30 minutes from Saint-Malo and 20 minutes from the beaches of the coast, it is the perfect place to enjoy the seaside charms without being overcrowded.
Established on the edge of the Mesnil forest, Le Tronchet sees its history intimately linked to that of... the woods. Its name, moreover, is very evocative, since it means "little wood". And woods, for sure there are woods at Le Tronchet! The territory of the commune is almost entirely covered with forests, from the Mesnil national forest to the Beaufort woods, not forgetting Mireloup and its artificial lake. As far as heritage is concerned, Le Tronchet has nothing to be ashamed of as it is home to splendid testimonies of its rich past, such as its abbey. Built in the 12th century, the Abbey of Notre-Dame-du-Tronchet is absolutely magnificent; several times ruined and rebuilt in the course of history, it now boasts splendid 17th century walls, as well as a 13th century abbey manor house. A monastery of Benedictine monks, it impresses with its gardens and the magnificent arcades that define them. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette chapel next to the Mesnil manor house (octagonal in shape), or the Malouinière chapel in Haut-Mesnil are also worth seeing. The latter in particular, is worth a visit for its architecture and its history since it was built in 1875 by Adolphe Surcouf, the son of the famous privateer Robert Surcouf. The manor of Saint-Yvieux (former hideout of resistance fighters during the Occupation), but also the splendid 16th and 17th century residences located on the side of the hamlet of Bas-Liage will complete your visit. Golfers ? Le Tronchet is home to the golf course of Saint-Malo! With its 18-hole driving range for experienced golfers and its 9-hole course for beginners, it is renowned as one of the most beautiful golf courses in the region, attracting British tourists in particular. Hikers ? There are many itineraries in the Tronchet area. Through its forests, walkers and mountain bikers will find a myriad of marked trails perfect for discovering the region, but also for reaching the famous city of Saint-Malo.
Ah, Saint-Malo... Is it still useful to present it? A renowned privateer city, surrounded by thick grey ramparts overlooking the sea, Saint-Malo fascinates for the magnificence of its old granite stones, its English style houses, and for its magnificent beaches. From the dungeon of the Château de Saint-Malo to the Fort du Petit Bé accessible at low tide, via the former royal fort, Robert Surcouf's hotel, the Saint-Vincent cathedral and the ramparts, there are many sites and monuments to visit here. From its beaches, in addition to the sandcastle competitions, sunbathing and swimming sessions, there are many water activities available ranging from surfing to paddle, not forgetting longe-côte, sailing, kitesurfing, bodyboarding and many more. In addition, from its harbour, you can opt for sea excursions along the coast or to the islands of Jersey and Guernsey. A must do for lovers of "little" as well as "big" Brittany!
