Want to get away from it all? Peace and quiet? A cultural interlude in the countryside, far from the big destinations that bring in thousands of people? What if you took your tickets to Sonnay? Between history and fresh air, nature and culture, Sonnay is a well-hidden gem, which you are lucky to have stumbled upon.

The commune of Sonnay is located in the department of Isère, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. On the border with the Drôme, very close to Roussillon and the banks of the Rhône, which flows some ten kilometres further west, Sonnay is a quiet commune where a little more than 1,200 souls live all year round.

A destination that is little known to the general public, Sonnay is one of those villages with immense charm, which in no time at all give the impression that you are at home. But what to see? Start with the Sainte-Catherine district, which takes its name from the spring that once fed the superb Roman baths, before taking the time to wander through the village and discover its authentic architecture. You will not be able to miss the magnificent Berthon House: built during the 17th century, under the reign of Louis XIV, this admirably preserved building was once a stagecoach stop. Not far away, in the heart of the village, the oil mill is the pride of Sonnay, as well as the unavoidable telegraph: located at the highest point of the village of Sonnay, this old communication tool gave its name to a district, and offers from its viewpoint perched at an altitude of 402 meters an unobstructed panorama of Mont Pilat, Mont Blanc, the Alps, Vercors, as well as the hills of the Vivarais and Drôme. Accessible after a short hike, this magnificent place is also the perfect place to join the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

A land marked by history, Sonnay is located in the heart of a region rich in castles, each one more beautiful than the next. The nearest is the Château d'Anjou, located a few steps from the Château de Fondru and the Château de Jarcieu. The imposing Château de Bresson, the Château du Louvier and many others will give this stay in Isère a little taste of French elegance that the whole family will love! Finally, twenty kilometres away, the local star is none other than the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval! Located in the village of Hauterives, in the heart of the Drôme hills, this magnificent castle in the heart of a lush garden is worth a visit for its marvellous history and the splendour of its decorations, which will transport you to the four corners of the globe.
