Ah, how beautiful Montrichard is! A medieval city, as few remain today, Montrichard combines elegance and history with a certain brio. To visit Montrichard is to embark on a real leap in time, to discover its splendid heritage inherited from the 11th century. Here, the cobbled streets give an immeasurable charm to the town, and this very particular impression of travelling through the ages. As you stroll through the town, you will discover its warm atmosphere and its well-preserved heritage. What to see? Its dungeon! Built on a hill, this large square keep, once attached to a vast castle, had the mission of defending the County of Anjou and monitoring the Roman road to Compostela. Fortified by three large surrounding walls, it is the only remnant of the 11th century fortress, and today houses two museums, an Archaeological Museum and an Ethnology Museum which will plunge you into the heart of the atmosphere of the Montrichard of the very early 20th century. If it is worth a visit for its architecture and museums, you also come here to contemplate incredible panoramas from its terraces, which reveal to the visitors remarkable landscapes of the city and the neighbouring valleys. At the foot of the castle, the 11th-century church of Notre-Dame de Nanteuil is worth a visit for its staircases, its decorations, its paintings and its flamboyant style window. The heart of the village is studded with a myriad of splendid houses such as the Ave-Maria mansions, the Prêche house and the Effiat hotel, as well as an elegant collection of 15th century timber-framed houses. The bridge over the Cher is also emblematic of Montrichard; with its superb medieval arcades, this long bridge is one of the most beautiful postcards of the town that amateur photographers hasten to immortalize at sunset.

The other star of Montrichard is its beach. Fitted out for families along the Cher river, it is the perfect place to refresh oneself in the summer period. Swimming is supervised, and you can enjoy a whole range of sporting activities from canoeing to tennis, not forgetting pedal boat rides and bike hire! In addition to hiking, water sports along the Cher river or horse riding, cycling is definitely THE good option to visit Montrichard and the Loire castles area. The Château de Chenonceau is only 15 minutes away, as is the 16th century Château de Montpoupon. The Royal Castle of Amboise, the Clos Lucé, the Renaissance Castle of Chaumont, that of Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher or the Castle of Fougères-sur-Bièvre are also only a few kilometres away from Montrichard, the opportunity for lovers of history and old stones to discover the grace, elegance and magnificence of France's heritage!
