At the edge of the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park, Gramat, in the Occitania region, is a picturesque holiday destination. Its beautiful architecture, its living environment and its ideal location to discover the most beautiful corners of the region make it a site of choice for stays in the countryside.
Gramat, a charming village, has its roots dating back to the Mesolithic era, as evidenced by the bones of the so-called "Man of Gramat", discovered not far from the heart of the village. Rich in a very important heritage, the city has many monuments to visit during your stay. St. Peter's Church is certainly the most imposing building in Gramat: neo-Gothic and Gothic in style, its construction dates back to the very beginning of the 20th century. With its sublime canopies, its organ listed as a Historic Monument and its interior decorations, this church is really worth a visit. Pass through the Notre-Dame church, then under the Clock Tower: overlooking an old medieval gate transformed into a belfry in the 16th century, this tower spanning a small alleyway once housed a bell that served to alert villagers in case of danger or during celebrations. Continue your visit towards the Place du Four and then the city gardens, to see the convent of the Sisters of Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire in the distance. Take rue Joviale, rue Saint-Roch to admire Pierre Bonhomme's house, Maison Varagne and its corbelled watchtowers, and finally discover the Place des Halles. Famous for the many fairs it has hosted since the 13th century, it is the historic heart of Gramat. Place François Mitterrand is also worth a visit: the highest point of the city, it was once adorned with a wealthy castle, built during the 11th century. Although now destroyed, you can guess the outlines of the thick walls of the castrum that stood at the time facing the Causses du Quercy and the Dordogne Valley.
As a family, the Gramat animal park will delight both adults and children: deer, elk, deer, fallow deer, fallow deer, reindeer, but also owls, vultures, ducks, peacocks, storks, monkeys, marmots, ostriches, goats, alpacas, horses, yaks, lynx, foxes, bears, otters and wolves inhabit this immense park, a true paradise for animal lovers. In addition to its many walking trails, you can opt for a full morning dedicated to feeding animals, a unique, fun and educational experience, perfect for children. Don't hesitate to take your visit a little further for a day in the Rocamadour Monkey Forest! While passing through this sacred city, take the opportunity to visit this absolutely wonderful historical destination. A medieval city well known to pilgrims, Rocamadour has countless historical treasures to see without hesitation: its crypt of Saint-Amadour, the basilica of Saint-Sauveur, the Black Virgin, but also its miraculous Chapel and its sanctuary classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site are among the most beautiful sites in the Lot.
Hiking, mountain biking, trail or quiet walks lovers? You will necessarily find your happiness by staying in Gramat. In the Causses du Quercy sector, there are many signposted routes that will allow you to discover the smallest secrets of its valleys. With the family, we particularly recommend the Boucle du Moulin du Saut, which, along its 4.2 kilometres, will allow you to discover all the richness of this Natura 2000 classified site.
