The Basque coast invites you to discover its secrets and culture! Once famous for its whale fishing, the city of Biarritz was transformed into a highly coveted seaside resort with the fashion for sea bathing in the 19th century. It must be said that it did not welcome just anyone! When the Empress Eugenie made it her favorite place to stay, she was followed by many personalities of the European nobility. The presence of these remarkable visitors not only allowed the development of the tourist activity but also left its traces on the architecture of the sites of Biarritz.
In 1864, the Empress commissioned the Imperial Chapel, an architectural jewel mixing Roman-Byzantine and Hispano-Moorish styles. Of incomparable beauty, it was classified as a historical monument in 1981. Thirty years later, the Russian imperial family came to Biarritz for the inauguration of the Orthodox church in 1892. This majestic building testifies to the continental appeal of Biarritz at that time.
The Historical Museum, located in the former Anglican church, traces the history of the city through a vast collection. However, it is far from being the only museum in Biarritz and certainly not the most unusual. For a visit that will make your mouth water, you should go to Planète Musée du Chocolat. After a welcome tasting, this gourmet tour offers you to discover the history of chocolate through a projection and a collection of objects. At the end of the tour, a hot chocolate prepared the old fashioned way is waiting for you to finish in beauty. A real cultural journey is offered to you at the Asiatica Art Museum. More than a thousand works of art from different periods are presented in order to penetrate the world of Indian, Chinese, Nepalese or Tibetan artists.
But Biarritz has never forgotten its link with the sea. It is on its beaches that a sport, now widely popularized, made its debut in France: surfing! During the shooting of one of his films in 1956, the American screenwriter Peter Viertel fell under the spell of the Biarritz waves and took advantage of his stay to practice his favorite sport, which was still unknown on the French coast at that time. Since then, many surfing schools have been established in the Basque city which has already hosted several editions of the French championships.

No restaurants open because of the confinement, but if they had been: very large choice possible. Very nice shops of all kinds. Very beautiful region to visit and Biarritz is a very beautiful city.

The croustades at marchė are excellent, the beach restaurant "La toile rouge" å Seignosse is a very nice surprise, an aperitif on the beaches of Anglet : å to do.
