The Basque coast invites you to discover its secrets and its culture! Formerly famous for whaling, the city of Biarritz was transformed into a seaside resort very coveted with the fashion of seaside baths of the 19th century. But Biarritz has never forgotten its link with the sea. It is on its beaches that a sport, now widely popularized, made its debut in France : surfing ! During the shooting of one of his films in 1956, the American screenwriter Peter Viertel falls under the charm of the biarrotes waves and takes advantage of his stay to practice his favorite sport, still unknown to the French coasts at that time. Since then, many surf schools have settled in the Basque city which has already hosted several editions of the French championships.
