A city of art and history located only thirty kilometres from the Spanish border, Perpignan is the Catalan capital of France. Former capital of the Kingdom of Majorca, Perpignan preserves a very rich built heritage from its past that you will not want to miss. If there is one building that cannot be ignored, it is the palace of the Kings of Majorca. Built in the heart of the city during the 13th century, this astonishing palace symbolised the heart of the Kingdom of Majorca in its time: with its Romanesque and Gothic influence, this monument with its particular charm is worth a visit, both for its exterior appearance and for the rich exhibitions it contains, the workshops and events it hosts throughout the year.
Emblematic of Perpignan, the Castillet is undoubtedly one of the most visited sites in the city. Recognizable by its red bricks, the one that was once the main gate of the Perpignan enclosure dates back to the 14th century. Made of bricks and magnificent marble, this local jewel offers from the top of its 142 steps a very nice view of the city of Perpignan, a must see! Then continue your discovery of this historic city by visiting Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral, the beach of the Lodge, the former bishopric on rue de l'Académie, the wonderful 19th century Hôtel Pams, Casa Xanxo, the chapel of the Tiers-Ordre place de la Révolution Française, the magnificent Museum of Natural History or the famous Convent of the Minimes: built in 1575, the latter hosts numerous exhibitions and is an ideal place for a bucolic stroll under the legendary Perpignan sun, as is Bir Hakeim Square or the magnificent Promenade des Platanes, punctuated by statues and centenary trees. You can also opt for a discovery of the city by small train, or even a river trip in Catalan boats, along the meanders of the Basse in the heart of Perpignan.
Very attached to its Catalan culture, the city of Perpignan is discovered during walks, cycling, but also during good meals with local colours. On the menu? Catalan charcuterie, dios, cargolade, boutifarre, fougasse, nougat, aïoli or even Venus' arm will delight the stomachs of gourmands, whether they are young or old.
If you can't imagine a holiday without a few fathoms and a few breaks of idleness under the sun, then we advise you to go to the beautiful lake of Villeneuve de la Raho, 10 kilometres south of Perpignan to enjoy its waters, its green spaces and its panoramic view of the Canigou, or even the beaches of Canet-en-Roussillon, about 20 minutes away. On the program: swimming, paddle, kitesurfing, wakeboarding, kayaking, jet skiing, scuba diving... Something to delight fans of water activities!
