Known for housing the very first citadel of the modern era, Salses-le-Château is a treasure of history. In the Pyrénées-Orientales department, on the border with the Aude, Salses-le-Château is watered on its eastern side by the banks of the Etang de Salses, also known as the "Etang de Leucate". A true architectural gem, the village is renowned for its fortress: considered by some to be one of the finest masterpieces of military art in the area, the fortress of Salses was built between 1497 and 1502 by the Spanish Catholic kings, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. On the border between France and Spain, it is one of the only castles in the area still standing, and is worth a visit for its ancient architecture, its decorations and its wall, which is more than 10 metres thick and contains a whole labyrinth of galleries. In order not to miss anything of its rich heritage, the village of Salses has been equipped with signposted itineraries perfect for young and old alike. The "Chemin Salséen" (11 kilometres), the "Chemin du Terroir" (7.5 kilometres) through orchards and vineyards, the "Chemin de l'Histoire" (12.4 kilometres) and many others will allow you to immerse yourself in the history of the village. You will discover the Catalan Country Gate perched on the heights of Salses-le-Château, the 1693 Saint-Etienne church, the Romanesque Sainte-Cécile de Garrieux church, the typical café de la Loge and the Font Estramar salt water spring.
A marvellous lagoon bordering the Languedoc coastline, the Salses pond offers incomparable views of the legendary Pic du Canigou from its banks. A paradise for sportsmen and contemplative people, it is the ideal place for walking or horse riding, but also for a few bike rides in the coolness of the lake. You can go fishing, or opt for water sports activities on the lake, from kayaking to swimming, underwater hunting, water skiing, paddle, kitesurfing, windsurfing, or even boating and swimming, always with incredible views of the mountains in the background. Finally, for those who dream of the Mediterranean, you should know that its beaches are only ten minutes away from Salses-le-Château. From the beaches of Barcarès, dinners with your feet in the water, swimming, surfing, paddle, paragliding and other water activities will be on the program, to complete this stay in Salses-le-Château!
