Located on the banks of the Têt river, at the foot of the Canigou massif, Villefranche-de-Conflent is a small and picturesque village. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", this medieval city has many assets for exotic and cultural stays. To begin your visit, nothing beats a stroll through the heart of its fortress, one of the best preserved in France: you will enter it either through the Porte de France or the Porte d'Espagne, which will allow you to discover superb medieval Catalan residences (13th and 14th centuries) made of pink marble, such as the one found in the mountains that surround the city. Walk around the ramparts via the upper road built by Vauban in the 17th century, or via the lower vault built in the Middle Ages, and take the time to stroll along the thick round paths with fortified gates that surround the village. After enjoying the exceptional view of the mountains (absolutely magnificent at sunrise), go down towards the centre of the village. Go through the rue Saint-Jacques and the superb rue Saint-Jean, dotted with beautiful residences listed as Historic Monuments, discover the belfry tower of the Hôtel de Ville, the art galleries, the shops with their fronts full of little witches (many legends surround the village), without forgetting the beautiful Romanesque church Saint-Jacques, famous for its entrance made of pink marble. Then take the Saint-Pierre bridge over the Têt river and head towards the emblem of Villefranche-de-Conflent: the magnificent Fort Liberia. Built by Vauban during the 17th century and fortified under Napoleon III, this admirably preserved sentinel is truly worth a visit. To reach it, you will have to take the "Thousand Steps Underground" connecting the city to the monument, a staircase that actually has 734 steps (all the same!). If you do not feel up to it, don't panic, shuttles and 4x4s will allow you to access the building in a few minutes, so that you too can enjoy the incomparable views over the entire Conflent, the village, the Canigou and the mountains that the fort offers from its 180 metres high.

In addition to its rich architectural capital, Villefranche-de-Conflent has a very beautiful natural heritage, starting with its splendid caves, not to be missed during your stay. Three of them, the Caves of the Canalettes are barely 300 metres from the heart of the village: the Cave of the Canalettes, the Bastera Cova and finally the Cave of the Grandes Canalettes (the most visited) are perfect ideas for outings for a little freshness on hot summer days. Finally, if it is a stroll to take in Villefranche-de-Conflent, it is the famous "Yellow Train": symbol of the Catalan Country with its open wagons, much appreciated to admire the landscape, it winds through the hills, viaducts, bridges and high plateaus of Cerdanya.
