Since always, the Savoyard resorts are known throughout the world for their high-quality ski areas. Méribel is far from being an exception. On the contrary, this tourist resort in the Tarentaise valley attracts many visitors every year to the ski resorts. It is also a Scotsman who is at the origin of its creation. Peter Lindsay is looking for a new European ski resort when he visits the town of Les Allues In 1936. The place was perfectly suited to the ambitious project he had in mind, and in 1938, a first ski lift was installed directly on the village, and in a very short time, Meribel was born.
Today, Méribel is also known for its traditional architecture. The residences and chalets of wood and stone are easily integrated into the snowy landscapes. No buildings disfiguring the view, Méribel seeks above all to preserve its atmosphere of Savoyard village. And each of the five villages stations respects this commitment. However, this does not prevent a lot of diversity : each resort has its own atmosphere.
Méribel les Allues is the chief town of the village and the traditional corner par excellence. The commune existed well before the station and its inhabitants will not hesitate to make you share its history through its patrimony and its museum. Former hamlet dotted with sheepfolds, Méribel Village is rather family. It is the ideal place for those who wish to enjoy the ski area during the day and to find peace in the evening. Méribel Center is, as the name suggests, the beating heart of the resort. Sports and entertaining activities abound, a festive atmosphere and a privileged access to the slopes : this is what awaits you ! Shopping, relaxation, catering, entertainment, sport, everything is at hand in Méribel Center. In Méribel les Hauts, the atmosphere is more peaceful. Located near the Altiport, it offers a beautiful view over the rest of the resort. Finally, Méribel Mottaret is perfect for those who prefer skiing before anything else ! Its numerous residences make it possible to reach the ski slopes at the foot in no time. Whatever your preferences, one thing is certain, there is something for everyone in Méribel.
The ski area of Méribel is particularly renowned for its great diversity and favorable sunshine. The official competitions that have trusted the resort attest to the quality of its tracks. In 1992, at the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, Méribel hosted the women's alpine skiing events. In 2015, the resort is again selected, this time to organize the final events of the Alpine Ski World Cup. The best athletes in the world came to confront the most difficult tracks of the resort. Moreover, Méribel belongs to the largest ski area in the world : the 3 Valleys grouping eight resorts of the Tarentaise over an area of 600 kilometers of slopes. The Sherpa's delicatessen and cheese section was well stocked and of high quality, which meant that we didn't have to systematically go down to the centre for specialist shops.

Very pleasant station at the preserved site without building bars. Very good value for money at "La Cantine d'Alvar" at the foot of the slopes.

Being the most "saturated" week in terms of holidaymakers, it appears that traffic is easy and there are sufficient parking spaces (except in Méribel centre at the "rond-point des pistes"). But for restaurants in the evening, it's best to take your car. All the information is available at the tourist office and even at the Moutiers train station (shuttle bus lines, maps of the lifts and slopes, restaurant lists with annotations, resort maps, geographical location of each building and hotel, etc.).

Closed lifts: snowshoes, snowshoes = there's plenty to do. Go to the Altiport for cross-country skiing : top. A snowmobile ride, noisy and polluting, certainly, but to be done once for the sensations!

I recommend the restaurant at the Centron leisure base: good welcome, good food in a beautiful setting and the owner is welcoming and friendly.

Good table: starting from Mottaret (along the Tueda lake), go up to the "Refuge du Plan" (35' walk) in the moonlight, the table is excellent, you have to reserve, it is only open in the evening in winter, and in summer only at noon.
