Capital of the Seine-Maritime, Rouen is one of those French cities that you must see at least once in your life. Cultural, historical, dynamic, exotic and gourmet, it is a must for city holidays... but not too much!

2 hours from Paris and 1 hour from the beaches of Honfleur, Fécamp and Étretat, Rouen is one of those destinations that you don't necessarily think of at first glance for a romantic or family holiday... And yet! Nicknamed the "City of a Hundred Spires" by Victor Hugo, Rouen is a real open-air museum, a treasure for those who love history and old stones. Its historical past goes back to a very distant time, the Gallo-Roman era. From this time and the following ones, Rouen has brilliantly preserved a heritage that you will be able to discover by walking its streets, although most of it was destroyed during the bombings of the Second World War. Our advice for discovering Rouen? Take the time to stroll through the pedestrian streets in the north-east of the city: described by Flaubert in the famous book Madame Bovary, the Rue Eau de Robec is undoubtedly the most picturesque street in the whole of Rouen, which used to be teeming with industrial activity and dye works. The antique dealers' district just next door will amaze bargain hunters thanks to more than thirty merchants who are based around rue Damiette, and who make Rouen the 3rd most important antique dealer's town in France. Then go through the Clos Saint-Marc to discover its market, before losing yourself in the heart of the city centre. On a human scale, the heart of Rouen is full of treasures to discover: you will see a large number of Gothic buildings such as the Notre-Dame cathedral (a 12th century masterpiece which is worth a visit for its decorations, its episcopal palace and its spire, the highest in France, which rises to more than 151 metres), or the Palais de Justice and its remarkable stone lacework. Not far away is THE emblematic monument of Rouen: the Gros Horloge. An astronomical clock dating from the 14th century, this treasure is made up of a Gothic belfry, a Renaissance dial and a Louis XV style fountain. The belfry is also home to the town's bells and clock, whose mechanism was one of the oldest in Europe.

You thought you'd seen everything there was to see? It is impossible to talk about Rouen without mentioning Joan of Arc, so several buildings and itineraries will allow you to retrace her history: from the Joan of Arc Tower where her trial took place to the famous Place du Vieux-Marché where she was burned alive in 1431, via the Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc church and the Joan of Arc historial, you will know everything about the woman who has always marked the history of Rouen. The Museum of Fine Arts, the Ceramics Museum, the Jardin des Plantes, the quays of the Seine where it is good to banter hand in hand, the church of Saint-Maclou and its portal with five porches, but also the numerous restaurants of Rouen which will allow you to discover the richness of the Norman gastronomy (apple juice, cider, calvados, beers, Joan of Arc's tears, Rouen's Mirliton, apple pie, livarot, Norman escalope, teurgoule, Caen-style tripe, omelets, andouille...) will plunge you into the heart of Rouen's history.
