Located on its limestone peak overlooking the Vère valley, the bastide of Castelnau-de-Montmiral is in the heart of the Tarn countryside, in the Midi-Pyrénées region. Adored for its green setting, this charming village is just as much appreciated by visitors for the astonishing beauty of its very old buildings. A bastide classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", this medieval town in the Tarn region, nestled in the heart of the Gaillac vineyards, is home to many treasures that you should discover. As you enter the town, you get the impression of a powerful, unconquerable fortress. One can imagine oneself centuries back in the heart of a powerful bastide where craftsmen and merchants set the pace of the day. Built around 1220, and despite having lived through the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion, the commune of Castelnau-de-Montmiral still boasts a priceless, preserved heritage, which has earned it a classification. Take the time to lose yourself in the tangled streets, which tirelessly invite you to contemplate. You will discover old renovated houses, residences that tell the story of this town with their stones and their timber frames. A must? Visit the Place des Arcades: a must-see in Castelnau-de-Montmiral, this square is known as the market square. It is the beating heart of the village and a must for those who want to soak up its atmosphere. It also hosts concerts in July and August. With its old buildings, arcades and terraces, it is also the ideal place to have a drink! In terms of heritage, the church of the Assumption is worth a visit: dating from the 15th century, it is known for its treasure room which houses the exceptional Cross of the Consuls, a reliquary adorned with 310 precious stones, a masterpiece of religious goldsmithery that was hidden in a grain tank during the Revolution. Go through the Place de la Rose, from where pilgrims left for Santiago de Compostela or Rome, and discover the fountains, the fortified gates (those of Toulze and Garrics), the castles of Fézembat, Mayragues, Corduriès and Mazières, the 18th century wash house, not forgetting the splendid medieval houses, the remains of the old fortifications, and the statue of the Virgin. From this statue, you can also enjoy a breathtaking view of the Grésigne forest below!
Outdoor enthusiasts will find many hiking and biking routes, whether you are a seasoned sportsman or a weekend walker. The Vère valley, but also the Grésigne forest and the Gaillac vineyards are studded with a plethora of marked trails, both bucolic and sporting, accessible on foot, by bike and on horseback.
