It is in the heart of Provence, just at the foot of the Sainte-Baume massif, that the village of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume is located. Located in the basin of an ancient dried-up lake, this charming village enjoys an ideal location, halfway between the very first Alpine foothills and the Mediterranean beaches. Steeped in tradition, this charming village between Aix-en-Provence and Brignoles is also a dynamic destination that never fails to delight visitors with its many events throughout the year (Saint Vincent's Day, Medieval Festival, concerts, organ recitals, Santon Fair, Mary Magdalene's Day, etc.) and its Provencal markets. Ah, it's so good to stroll along its streets full of history, especially in the old medieval Jewish quarters, which today house great architectural and artistic treasures. What to see? The Basilica of Sainte-Madeleine, emblematic of local history, known as the largest Gothic building in Provence. It is also famous for its 18th century organs, and for housing in its 4th century Gallo-Roman crypt the sarcophagus containing the relics of Sainte-Madeleine, as well as the sarcophagi of Sainte-Suzanne, Saint-Sidoine, Saint-Maximin and Sainte-Marcelle. In the old town, there are many other sites to add to your visit, such as the cloister of the former Royal Convent of the Dominican Friars (13th and 17th centuries), or the marvellous porch and the superb arcades dating from the 13th century, emblematic of the Jewish quarter. Pass by the Place Malherbe, take a break on the terrace of a restaurant at the foot of a hundred-year-old plane tree, and opt for a cultural outing at La Croisée des Arts before shopping at the market, which is full of people every Wednesday morning. The fountain, the Rabbi's house, the Synagogue, but also the Logis Notre-Dame and the old shady streets of the village will complete your visit of Saint-Maximin-la-Baume.
A land of escape, Saint-Maximin-la-Baume is a real little paradise for nature lovers. Hikers? Many routes will allow you to survey the area of the village, especially in the direction of Mont Aurélien which, from its viewpoint, will offer you a breathtaking panorama of the Sainte-Victoire mountain and the Sainte-Baume massif, overhanging the Aurelian Way. But there are many other sites to see in the area, such as the Source de l'Argens, 5.1 kilometres away, the Gorges du Caramy, 7.2 kilometres away (a perfect place for a picnic), the Cascade du Tombereau, 7.8 kilometres away, or the impressive Cirque des Escarettes, 12.8 kilometres away from Saint-Maximin-la-Baume Mountain biking, bowling, laser games, swimming in the municipal pool, spa sessions, horseback riding, beach breaks (Cassis is 45 minutes away) and wine tasting will complete this stay.
