A small hilltop village in Provence, in the department of Haut-Vaucluse, Entrechaux is a real treat for the eyes and taste buds of its lucky visitors. Between Ventoux and Baronnies Provençales, this little corner of greenery has all the cards in hand to delight lovers of old stones and a change of scenery. Ready to embark?

Neighbouring village of Vaison-la-Romaine, 25 kilometres from Carpentras, 35 kilometres from Orange and 50 minutes from Avignon, Entrechaux is located in the heart of a territory rich in magnificent sites to visit. At the confluence of the Toulourenc and the Ouvèze River, this perched village in Provence on the border with the Drôme is at an altitude of 463 metres not far from the Mont Ventoux. Dominated by its imposing castle, Entrechaux boasts absolutely superb panoramas of the abundant nature that surrounds it. To begin with, we can only recommend that you leave your car at home to enjoy the beauty and charm of the village on quiet little walks. Entrechaux, an ancient Celtic and then Roman village, is a true open-air Romanesque museum, which has many traces of its rich past, such as the bridges that you can discover as you walk through the village. Fertile land, where melons, olives, grapes (whose vineyard produces an AOC Côtes du Ventoux wine), cherries, asparagus and apricots are produced, Entrechaux has a typical heritage of the region, made of old stones which give it a crazy cachet. Visit the Saint-André chapels (9th century), the Saint-Laurent chapel (11th century), not forgetting the Romanesque chapel Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth situated to the east of the town, which is worth a visit for its characteristic architecture of Provencal Romanesque art. But what makes Entrechaux a perfect postcard of Provence is its castle. Or at least the ruins of it. Consisting of two castles, the main building was built around the year 900 by the bishops of Vaison-la-Romaine. With its fortified chapel of Saint-Quentin, its "Grand Château" below, its church of Saint-Laurent and its large keep 20 metres high, it was once surrounded by thick ramparts. Abandoned, the building was partly looted and many of its stones were used for the construction of the present village. Today it has become a private property, this feudal castle can be visited during the summer period, a visit that we strongly recommend since from its heights, an incomparable panorama awaits you over the neighbouring villages, the castles of Crestet in the distance and Beaumont-du-Ventoux.

In addition to the list of visits to be made, the neighbouring villages of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, Pont-Saint-Esprit, Suze-la-Rousse, Valréas, and Vaison-la-Romaine. Hikers in search of thrills towards Mont Ventoux will set off from the village of Malaucène, 6 kilometres away, when at last quiet walkers will be able to take advantage of the magnificent walking routes that criss-cross the Ouvèze Valley and the banks of the Toulourenc to revel in the rich, unspoilt countryside. So many paths that will allow you to discover the prehistoric caves decorated with the Mask, waterfalls, the Roman bridge of Saint-Michel, intimate lakes where you can swim in peace and quiet and hidden caves, real jewels that make Entrechaux a must for cultural and exotic holidays!
