Near Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Saumane-de-Vaucluse is one of those pretty perched villages that seem to have come straight out of a dream. Under the Provence sun, it invites you to a relaxing holiday in the heart of an exceptional natural environment.
From the top of its rock, Saumane-de-Vaucluse dominates the Sorgues country and offers a magnificent view over the plain. Walking around the village, you will appreciate its authentic Provencal character with its stone houses, alleys, wash houses, fountain... You can also admire its Romanesque church Sainte-Trophime, dating from the twelfth century and whose bell tower-arcade houses a bell of 1400. At the top of the village, discover also the castle of Saumane whose presence is attested since the XIIe century and which was often remanié until the XVIIe century. One of these famous occupants was the Marquis de Sade who lived there part of his youth.
After this visit of the village, take advantage of the beauty of the surrounding nature to walk. On foot, take the path that crosses Saumane-de-Vaucluse and allows you to discover the Tapy valley. On the way, you will be able to see bories, dry stone huts which served as refuge, but also shelters under rock, natural cavities which were often arranged in troglodytic habitat like the shelter of Marculy. By bike, follow the signposted route called "De la Source à la Venise comtadine" which offers superb views of the Monts du Vaucluse, the Luberon and the Alpilles. To vary the pleasures, go then to the golf of Saumane which proposes a superb course 18 holes in the heart of the hills of Vaucluse.
During your stay in Saumane-de-Vaucluse, also take the time to visit the other villages of the Sorgues country. Discover Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, an ancient fishing town with countless canals that have earned it the nickname "Venice comtadine". You will be able to admire there many historical monuments : the Boutin tower, the old public attic, the hotel of Palerne but also many paddle wheels along the canals. Then visit the villages of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (Sainte-Marie and Saint-Véran church, chasm), Châteauneuf de Gadagne (Font-Segugne castle, Romanesque church) and Le Thor (Garancine district, Notre-Dame-du-Lac church, castle, Thouzon caves) and take advantage of these escapades to taste the flavours of the land : fougasses, courgette flower fritters, Provençal stew, foot packages, Ventoux wines...
