A romantic destination par excellence, Venice is the ideal city for romantic stays along its famous canals. It is hard not to succumb to its legendary charms, which have always won the hearts of many travellers. Historical and cultural, the city also known as the City of the Doges (named after the former magistrates of the Venetian Republic) is certainly one of the most beautiful cities in Italy.
As if out of time, Venice, with its unique atmosphere, canals and historical treasures, is a real invitation to romanticism. Venice is one of the main tourist centres of the "country at the bottom of the mountain" and is very (sometimes perhaps too much) appreciated by tourists. If the city has many remarkable sites, the ideal way to grasp their charms is to get lost in the randomness of its tangled alleys. Let yourself be carried away by the sounds, smells and splendours of Venetian architecture! You can't miss the Basilica of St. Mark: nicknamed "Chiesa d'Oro" (the golden church), this basilica is the most majestic in the whole city. Built in the year 832 in a Byzantine style, this imposing building contains sumptuous interior decorations made of gold and marble, magnificent golden mosaics and the relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist. Still in Piazza San Marco, in the heart of the city, is the most emblematic building in all of Venice: the Doge's Palace. Also known as the "Ducal Palace", this palace was in turn the residence of the Doges, the seat of government and the city's courthouse. Built on the banks of the Canal Grande in a style that combines Gothic and Venetian art, this palace can be contemplated both from the famous Place Saint-Marc and from the Adriatic Sea. Don't leave the neighborhood without immortalizing the Bridge of Sighs! The most famous bridge in Venice, this monument built in the 16th century links the Doge's Palace to the former prisons. It owes its name to the sighs of the newly tried prisoners, who used to walk across the bridge to their cells and breathe a sigh when they saw Venice for the very last time from small windows carved into the bridge. You can contemplate it from a nearby bridge, or even better, admire it during gondola rides.
Take time to stroll along the Fondamenta delle Zattere promenade, along the Giudecca Canal to Punta della Dogana: if the stroll is worth the daytime, we assure you that at night and at sunset, the panorama is even more beautiful over the islands of San Giorgio and Giudecca. Continue your visit towards the Chiesa dei Frari church, then go to the Rialto bridge: a symbol of Venice, it is also the oldest bridge in the whole city. Built in the 14th century, this wooden bridge was destroyed several times following fires and collapses, only to be rebuilt at the very end of the 16th century. 48 metres long and 22 metres wide, this circumflex accent spanning the Grand Canal connects the San Polo and San Marco districts and now houses some twenty shops.
Climb aboard the vaporetto to go up the 4 kilometres of the Canal Grande from Piazza San Marco to the Pont de la Liberté: you can observe the palaces, churches and bridges that make Venice such a mythical and iconoclastic city. In all, more than 170 magnificent buildings dot the banks of the canal, embodying all the richness of the Venetian heritage. Among these buildings, do not miss the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, the Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore and its bell tower, the Palazza Barbarigo, the Ca'd'Oro Palace, the Ca'Pesaro Palace, the Fondaco dei Turchi, the Rialto Bridge or the Santa Maria di Nazareth Church. Then embark for the islands of the Venice lagoon such as the splendid island of Burano with its colourful houses, the island of Torcello and the island of Murano (world famous for its beautifully worked glass from which superb jewellery and sculptures are made).
The Venice Carnival is certainly the most famous traditional Italian festival in the world. It brings together costume lovers, holiday enthusiasts and curious people from all over the world during the month of February. If you are in Venice at this time of year, don't forget your camera to capture the beauty of the sometimes eccentric (but always elegant) masks and costumes of its participants.
If it rains or the sun gives too much sunlight on the City of the Doges, we advise you to push the door of the Accademia Museum; extremely popular, it houses many masterpieces of Venetian painting, made between the 14th and 18th centuries. You can contemplate Bellini's paintings such as the "Procession to St. Mark's Square", but also Veronese's "Meals at Levi's", or Giorgione's "The Storm". Opera lovers will not want to miss the breathtaking Théâtre de La Fenice, a true temple of Italian music. It was here that Verdi's most beautiful works were performed, and La Callas made his first soprano's debut.
Finally, Venice would not be Venice without the delights of its gastronomy. Enjoy "cicchetti" (tapas), a "shade" in a "bàcaro" (Venetian wine bar), a Spritz or a glass of Bellini on the terrace, take the time for a candlelit dinner (this is the perfect place!), taste the legendary "pasta al nero di Seppi" (cuttlefish ink pasta), Venetian gnocchi, "bigoli in Salsa", but also "Risotto di Gò", refresh yourself with "gelato gianduiotto", and finish with the delicious sweet flavours of "Frittelle alla Veneziana", a traditional Veneto dessert.
