Discover a new facet of Catalonia in the province of Girona, nestled between the French-Spanish border and the Mediterranean Sea. A unique monument overlooking the very long Platja Gran, the Castle of Tossa de Mar, located in the town of the same name, almost has its feet in the water. This impressive medieval fortified complex was built to defend the coast from the pirates who wanted to impose their law at that time. From its heights, the view of the coastline is simply breathtaking. If you are a fan of architecture, you will find something to your liking in the province's religious buildings. The church of Sant Romà in Lloret de Mar, in the heart of the old town, is a must-see because of its surprisingly unusual charm. It is in Catalan Gothic style and has been enlarged several times without disfiguring its magnificent and colorful exterior.
Art lovers should not miss the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the city of birth and death of the artist. With its original architecture, true to his image, it is the last major work of Salvador Dalí, inaugurated in 1974. Since its inception, the entire universe of the artist is exposed for a true artistic journey. The master himself is buried in the museum's crypt since his death in 1989.
Girona is also a green nature between sea and mountain. The Caminos de la Ronda, which run along the Costa Brava, take you to exceptional panoramas near the clear waters of the Mediterranean. In S'Agaro, the peaceful coastal walk will take you closer to the rocky relief of the coast and will make you discover the small hidden coves of this beautiful town.
But the treasures of the province of Girona will not only delight your eyes, they will also delight your taste buds. The Girona specialty par excellence is the famous xuixo, a doughnut filled with cream and sprinkled with granulated sugar. Finally, for lovers of (very) good Mediterranean cuisine, you should know that the prestigious restaurant El Celler de Can Roca, run by three brothers who have been passionate about cooking since they were children, has been voted the best restaurant... in the world twice! Located in the capital of Gerona, the Roca brothers describe it as a free style restaurant, between local and avant-garde cuisine.
