El Port de la Selva is a small fishing village with immeasurable charm, situated just a short distance from Cap de Creus, in the north of the Costa Brava. With its typical architecture of the villages of the Catalan coast made of beautiful whitewashed houses articulated around a church, it seduces each year more and more curious visitors who come to enjoy its privileged climate and its relaxing beaches.
Hidden in a protected bay at the foot of the sublime Cabo de Creus natural park and less than 30 kilometres from the border with France, El Port de la Selva is a destination of choice for anyone wishing to combine sports, water sports, culture and relaxation during their holidays. To capture all the beauty of this place, you will first have to visit the heart of the village to discover its sacred buildings in the image of the Monastery of Sant Pire de Roses : built on one of the slopes of the Verdera mountain and overlooking the Selva de Mar, it offers a unique view over the entire bay and the town of El Port de la Selva. Majestic, this 1st century building is well worth a visit, both for its imposing architecture and for the harmony of the landscapes it embraces. During your walks in the city centre, not far from the sea, you will certainly cross the road of the village church, Santa Maria de les Neus. In Gothic style, this building shelters several sculptures of the monastery, and is an obligatory place of passage for whoever likes the religious art.
There are many hiking routes through the forests and mountains on the Cap de Creus and Serra de Rodes sides. Whether you are on foot or by bike, you will necessarily find the itinerary adapted to your level. The GR 11 in particular will enable you to join the church Sant Baldiri de Taballera (5 kilometres from the village), as well as the village of La Vall de Santa Creu.
The coast from Port de la Selva to Cap de Creus offers its lucky visitors a myriad of small coves and beautiful secluded beaches, along a rugged coast and rather difficult to access. The Cala Cativa, the Cala Torta, the Cala Galera, the Fornells and the Taballera beach in particular are absolutely worth seeing! On the side of El Port de la Selva, the "Cala Tamariua", a wild beach made of pebbles, is a real corner of paradise. Calm, relaxing, with its crystal clear water that lets glimpse rich sea beds, it is worthy of the most beautiful postcards. If you choose to go, don't forget your mask and snorkel! It is also bordered by a coastal path, which will allow you in no time to go in the most beautiful virgin coves of the coast. To the north of El Port de la Selva, the "Plage du Port de Vall" is the largest beach in the resort. Very little frequented because of its difficult access, it offers superb panoramas on the village and the Cap de Creus. If you walk along the Round Route of El Port de la Selva, you will surely come across the "Cala de Naples". Lovée below a cliff, it is (like the "Cala Tamariua"), the perfect spot for diving thanks to its translucent waters. Still on the Chemin de Ronde, the "Plage de Vaquers" is one of the largest coves towards Llança. Rather family, it will delight young and old alike thanks to its enchanting setting and its transparent waters. The "Port de la Selva Beach" is the city's main urban beach. It is one of the few sandy beaches on the Costa Brava and is very popular during the summer. You will find a beautiful pedestrian walk as well as a nautical center which will allow you to practice a wide choice of activities at sea, from water skiing to kitesurfing, without forgetting paddle, surfing, windsurfing and sea kayaking.
Finally if you choose to come to El Port de la Selva out of season, know that during the month of March, and this for years now, the village organizes the festival of asparagus. If its name is at the very least original, this celebration allows visitors to discover the richness of local productions during competitions and tastings : the perfect opportunity for you to discover all the most delicious local dishes, from "escalivada" to "trinxta", including "fideua", "xurros", "crema catalana", "horchata", fish, shellfish and sausages that make the reputation of Catalonia.
