Breathless: this is what the visit to Montefrio evokes. 50 minutes by car from Granada, at the foot of the Sierra de la Parapanda, this village in the province of Granada will dazzle you with the splendour of its heritage and landscapes.

Perched at an altitude of 833 metres, Montefrio, in the heart of Andalusia, is one of those favourite destinations for which you will succumb at first sight. Arriving by the road to Tocon, you will enjoy a unique panoramic view of the city of Montefrio and its famous Pic de la Villa. In the heart of the olive groves, the white houses with their light tiled roofs set on two small hills stand out to create an absolutely magnificent postcard of this perched city. Marked by the history and the passage of different civilizations over the centuries, this commune was coveted by Arabs and Christians until the 15th century, before finally falling into the hands of the Catholic Kings. With good shoes, climb the Pic de la Villa, this magnificent hill that dominates the whole city: you will be amazed by the monuments below that make up the Arab fortress, as well as by the amazing splendour of the Villa church, a 16th century Gothic church perched atop a rock, highly prized for its Renaissance style ornaments. Then take the time to get lost in the tangled alleys of Montefrio's city centre: there, amidst the whitewashed houses, the church of La Encarnacion will certainly attract your full attention. With its perfectly round dome (nicknamed "the rotunda"), it does not go unnoticed in the village. The San Juan de los Reyes Hospital, the Villa Castle (Castillo de la Villa), the old San Sebastian church and the Roman bridge are also worth seeing during your visit to Montefrio. The latter, built across the banks of the Milanos stream, was once used to connect the mountainous regions of the province of Málaga with the villages further north of the country.

Hiking enthusiasts, you can explore a vast network of itineraries in Montefrio according to your desires, in order to discover all its faces. The "Urban Helmet" path, the one called "Castle and Arab Force", but also the archaeological area of Penas de los Gitanos (which includes dolmens, numerous megalithic ensembles, caves, chasms and a Visigothic necropolis), The Torre de los Anillos, the Mirador de los Olivos (and its magnificent panoramas), the Mirador del Paseo, Arroyo de los Molinos or the Sierra de Parapanda are particularly recommended for a complete discovery of Montefrio and its surroundings. If you are driving, we can only suggest that you push your visit towards the Parque del Cubillas: ideal site for hiking, it is supplied with water by the Cubilla River. An oasis of freshness on hot summer days, it will satisfy water sports enthusiasts who can water-ski, sail or canoe there at their leisure, with the mountains as a backdrop.

Finally, the visit of Montefrio also takes place on the plate side. On the menu? Asparagus gazpacho, cold soup with marinated anchovies, almond chicken, eggplant fritters with honey, meatballs, tapas, sausages, cheeses, "olla de San Anton" (stew), tortilla, ham beans, "migas alpujarrenas", "ajo blanco" (a delicious cold soup with almonds and olive oil), potatoes, grilled sardines, huevos a la flamenca and other torrijas (a kind of honey toasted bread) will delight the taste buds of adults and children.
