On the southeast coast of the island of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, Puerto del Carmen seems to be the ideal place to stay under the sun. A small quiet village appreciated for its seaside attractions, Puerto del Carmen invites you to escape in an idyllic setting.
Beaches, beaches and more beaches... That's what the Puerto del Carmen coast is all about. Lanzarote's most important seaside resort, the municipality is well known for its 6 kilometres of hot sandy beaches. Three of them are particularly popular: the first, Playa Grande, is spread over more than a kilometre. Its calm waters and golden expanse seduce families and fans of fine sand (Lanzarote being volcanic, sandy beaches are rare), who come here sometimes to take a nap under its parasols, sometimes to swim. It is also the place where water sports enthusiasts meet: the range of activities on offer is wide, from sea kayaking to parasailing, water skiing, boat or pedal boat rides, sailing, jet-skiing, towed buoys or scuba diving. Snorkeling is particularly recommended in its clear waters, where, equipped with masks and snorkels, you can enjoy observing rainbow fish, zebra fish, parrot fish or starfish. In its extension, Los Pocillos beach is certainly the most touristic: restaurants, bars, mattress rental, parasols and other hotels border its long clear sandbar. If it may lack the traditional charm of Lanzarote at first sight, it still offers a vast expanse to relax in complete tranquility, without its towel being glued to that of its neighbour. North of Puerto del Carmen, Matagorda beach is bordered by a pleasant promenade where joggers, cyclists and onlookers enjoy strolling at every hour of the day. Here, swimming is safe and everyone can take advantage of the beautiful exposure of the beach to perfect their tan.
But Puerto del Carmen is not just about its beaches: a former fishing village, it offers a perfect place to stay for holidaymakers who love the outdoors. Surrounded by the Juan Bello mountains, Los Ajaches, the Famara massif and the Guardilama mountains, the seaside resort will allow hiking enthusiasts to discover the volcanic valleys that constitute the island's greatest geological heritage. In all, more than 300 volcanic craters, caves and lava fields dot Lanzarote.
In addition to swimming and hiking, the municipality offers a wide range of activities for young and old. The golf course of Puerto del Carmen is very popular with greens lovers: its 18-hole course located in the Lanzarote Golf Resort is one of the most popular sites on the island. With its panoramic views of the sea and its tree-lined paths, it is one of the most popular places for fans of the sport. Finally, for the whole family, Rancho Texas Park is a good idea to visit, especially during the hot summer months: in addition to observing sea lions, parrots, eagles, armadillos, pumas, dwarf goats, white tigers and other cougars, you can swim in it thanks to a vast aquatic area with a huge pool and two slides.
