Ready for a vacation in the Balearic sun? Head to Palma de Mallorca and its dreamy beaches as far as the eye can see, where you can enjoy long sunbaths.
Capital of the Balearic Islands and the island of Mallorca, Palma de Mallorca is one of the most popular destinations in Spain. Enjoying a privileged climate throughout the year with an average temperature of almost 18°C, this seaside resort is known worldwide for its beaches and heavenly coves. Lined with palm trees facing turquoise water, they are ideal for moments of idleness in an idyllic setting.
One thing is certain: during your vacation in Palma de Mallorca, you won't be bored. With a coastline of almost 20 kilometers, the resort is a great place for water sports. For sporty afternoons, take to the sea on a catamaran, dive to discover the ocean floor, or try your hand at surfing, windsurfing and flyboarding in crystal clear water. The main beach of the city is the "Playa de Palma", about ten kilometers from the historic center. Totally dedicated to beach tourism, it is lined with stores and restaurants, perfect for spending a few moments in the cool, far from the sometimes stifling heat that grips the city in summer. Very urbanized, it is not the most beautiful beach of the resort, but its long stretch of sand of 5 kilometers is conducive to many activities: beach volleyball games, pedal boat trips, sand castle competitions and lazing around. Less crowded, Molinar beach (further north) is popular with Palma residents: its pedestrian walkway and bicycle path make it an ideal place for strolling and sunbathing away from the crowded seaside. Closer to the city center, the beach of "C'an Père Antoni" is a place dedicated to relaxation in a dream setting: you can rent mattresses to lounge in the shade of umbrellas, facing the clear water. Don't hesitate to venture along the island's coastline to discover magnificent coves, sometimes secret and isolated, where you can bask in the sun in a heavenly setting. Cala Pi (south of Palma) and Cala Sa Calobra (north of the island) are two absolutely marvelous coves that you should visit, provided of course that you like turquoise water and scenery worthy of the most beautiful postcards...
If its rather concrete bay welcomes a multitude of clubs and trendy nightclubs (Majorca is famous for its lively evenings), its old town has kept its charm with its maze of typically Spanish streets, its stately homes and its magnificent monuments which will be for sure highlights of your stay. Start with a visit to the Almundaina Palace: it houses the King's Palace, the Queen's Palace and the beautiful royal chapel where many summer ceremonies are held. A true architectural gem, the Almundaina Palace is located right next to the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca. Erected in front of the sea, it is one of the most famous monuments on the island. This 44-meter high Gothic building is also known as the "Cathedral of Light" thanks to its huge rose window (one of the largest in the Gothic world) and its stained glass windows that let the sun's rays shine through, creating beautiful colored patterns in the cathedral's interior. The Halles de Palma, the Plaza Mayor and the "Castell de Bellver" (now the Palma History Museum) are also worth adding to your list of monuments to visit. If you come to Palma de Mallorca with your family, you must visit the city's aquarium: with fish from all over the world, it is one of the most beautiful in Spain.
Finally, to the west of Palma de Mallorca is the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. Crisscrossed by splendid hiking trails perfect for nature lovers, it is the ideal place to admire breathtaking views of the island from the heights of Puig Major (1445 meters above sea level).
