You dream of holidays in the sun, palm trees and long stretches of warm sand facing the sea ? Look no further: embark for Torremolinos. Here, the days take place at the slow rhythm of the murmur of the waves, and the nights are very animated : Torremolinos is reputed as being a destination of choice for festive holidays.
Located on the Costa del Sol, in Andalusia, a few kilometres from the magnificent white villages (such as Mijas) and Malaga, Torremolinos is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the coast, in particular because of its climate conducive to idleness. The dream coastline of this seaside resort conceals sumptuous beaches, although bordered by large hotel complexes : even if Torremolinos is pleasant, it is not the ideal resort for lovers of wild nature.
Start your stay by visiting the old town of Torremolinos. Full of history, it shelters many Arab, Greek, Roman and Phoenician remains that you will discover throughout your walks. Despite the expansion of its urbanisation, Torremolinos has managed to preserve its historic village centre. The district of El Calvario is one of the oldest, but also one of the most popular of the commune. You will discover the authentic atmosphere of this old quarter of sailors, as well as its maze of tangled and narrow streets, where small houses covered with orange trees and coloured magnolias stand. Take a stroll along Calle San Miguel, which is certainly the busiest street in the old Torremolinos : you will find a multitude of food shops, souvenir shops and Andalusian clothing. At the very end of the street is the church of San Miguel : built in the 18th century, this neo-classical building, painted white and yellow typical of Andalusia, is an absolute must. Stroll at the foot of the palm trees of the Plaza de la Nogalera or the Plaza de Andalucia, and take advantage of their shady terraces to sip some well-deserved refreshments. At the other end of Calle San Miguel is one of Torremolinos' symbols: the Torre Pimentel. Dating from the fourteenth century, this tower made of earth bricks and twelve meters high was formerly used as a watchtower, to prevent attacks at sea. From this tower, take the small spiral staircase and you will arrive directly on the clear sand of one of the most beautiful beaches of Torremolinos : that of Bajondillo.
Overlooked by the "Casa de Los Navajas" (a magnificent house from the early 1920s), Bajondillo is the ideal place for relaxing afternoons. You will find parasols, mattresses, pedalos, and many places to eat (Chiringuitos) at any time of the day: you will also have to taste the main dish of the local gastronomy, the "pescaito frito" (fried fish). Further north is Playmar Beach. In spite of its very urbanized environment, it is famous for its multiple nautical activities : windsurfing, kitesurfing, parachuting, towed buoy, surfing, sailing... In summer, film screenings are also organized on the beach, something to delight young and old ! Carihuela beach extends from the city centre to the Benalmadena marina. More than 2 kilometers long, it is ideal for family afternoons, and budding photographers will not fail to immortalize the superb panorama on the coast that offers this beach. At sunrise, you will certainly enjoy walking or jogging in the shade of the palm trees of the Passieg Maritim of Torremolinos : it is the ideal moment to enjoy the coolness and calm of the deserted promenade.
Finally, at nightfall, the beaches are the scene of many improvised parties facing the sea. Famous since the 1970s, Torremolinos' wild evenings with electro music still attract several generations of holidaymakers. The waterfront of the Nogalera is full of bars and nightclubs, where you can wiggle until the early morning.
