Bergerac, a commune in the Dordogne department, is an absolutely fascinating city of art and history. Ideal for holidays combining culture, history, discovery and walks, it is an essential stopover for anyone wishing to discover the charms of the Purple Perigord.
Proudly enthroned on the banks of the Dordogne, Bergerac will fascinate you with its architecture and its undeniable charm. Its maze of alleys, its intoxicating squares, the half-timbered houses on rue de la Mirpe and its pointed windows give it a very special atmosphere. It is particularly famous thanks to the famous Cyrano de Bergerac, hero of the work of the same name written by Edmond Rostand who left his mark on the city forever. During your walks in the heart of this city centre worthy of the most beautiful cities of the Middle Ages, you will certainly see many times the shadow of Cyrano hovering in its streets : a statue with the effigy of the famous character was erected in Piazza Pelissière. If Savinian Cyrano never pointed the tip of his nose in this famous périgourdine commune, he nevertheless became, in the eyes of the ordinary mortals, the most famous of all the Bergeracois. Within the municipality, three hiking and cycling loops (800 metres, 1.6 and 1.8 kilometres respectively) will take you from the Port of Cadouin to the Madeleine, passing through the 19th century districts and the historic centre, in the footsteps of Cyrano.
As for gastronomy, oenophiles will not fail to taste the wines of Bergerac which, thanks to their colour, make the international reputation of the Purple Perigord. And to do so, go to the Maison des Vins de Bergerac : it is in an old 17th century house, built around an old brick and wood cloister, that you will discover all the history of these wines so appreciated in the region. After this appetizer, head for the markets of Bergerac (located near the church and in front of the Marché Couvert) to whet your appetite : ducks, chocolates, farmhouse poultry, cabécou, pike, trout, caviar, walnuts, truffles, chestnuts, melons and strawberries will certainly delight gourmets. At the end of the day you will also enjoy a good slice of foie gras in the shade of a terrace, with a glass of fresh wine by hand with an evocative name : Monbazillac, Bergerac, Durac, Saussignac... The perfect beverages to savour Bergerac's calm and gentle way of life.
If there is another museum you will have to visit in Bergerac, it is the tobacco museum. Full of objects related to this so famous plant, it will allow you to understand its history of more than 3000 years. The pipe carving machine at the top of the museum is worth a look, as is the building itself : also known as "Château Henri IV", the Peyrarède House which today houses the Tobacco Museum is in fact an absolutely magnificent 17th century mansion house which, just for its architecture, deserves a detour.
Classified as a Natura 2000 site, the Dordogne and its meandering 483 kilometres are the scene of the most beautiful walks along the water. The preserved biodiversity of Bergerac attracts every year many holiday lovers "in the green", anxious to discover the Périgord nature and observe its richness. Inseparable from the history of this languorous river, Bergerac once lived to the rhythm of its port. Today, you can still board for a stroll in a gabare, ideal to enjoy superb panoramas on the city of Bergerac. For those who do not have a sea foot, you can always follow in the footsteps of the gabariers of yesteryear on a hike : while enjoying the good weather along the banks, follow the towpath from the port for a perfect walk. Almost 9 kilometres long, the "loop of Pécharmant" crosses the town and the vineyards of the same name : it will allow you, on foot, on horseback or by bicycle, to discover superb points of view on Bergerac and the castle of Monbazillac. Finally, for swimming desires, take the cycle route of the old port of Bergerac which will take you to the Parc de Pombonne and its lake, the ideal place to cool off during the hot weather.

Nice market in Issigeac, beautiful medieval village. Visit of the castle of Monbazillac and its tasting. Caves of Maxange (unusual) to see. The old center of Bergerac, the tobacco museum, the Conti museum, beautiful sculptures. Many bastides in this region: Eymet, Villeréal, Beaumont du Périgord, Lalinde. Visit of Sainte Alvère and its imposing castle. Limeuil classified as the most beautiful village in France...

In February, many places are closed. But one advantage: not too many tourists in the streets and alleys of the beautiful villages of the region. We liked the market of Issigeac on Sundays: we settled down to taste the local products that we had bought at the riverside at the entrance of the town. Bergerac is a very pretty town too.
