A former fishing port of great renown, the Landes commune of Capbreton reconverted in the last century in a seaside resort animated. Very marked by its maritime past, which brought it prosperity and recognition, "the city with a hundred captains" has long been a landmark of sailors and merchants. A strategic point of whaling until the 16th century, the commune gradually lost its attraction when this activity declined. It was the fashion of the sea baths, which marked the beginning of the 20th century, the creation of a marina and the arrival of surfing that allowed Capbreton to experience a real renaissance.
Nowadays, the Landes commune has a lot to offer to the holiday makers. It has preserved from its history with the sea several unique historical monuments like the church of St. Nicholas, whose tower used to serve as watchtower for sailors. Reconstructed in the 19th century, art lovers still admire the Gothic door of the old church and one of the four Pietàs des Landes, a polychrome statue dating from the 15th century. The Estacade is a symbolic walk of the town and takes us as close as possible to the sea. It was commissioned by Napoleon III in 1858 when a new port was built, and now measures 189 meters. She is featured on the cover of Sébastien Japrisot's novel, A Long Sunday of Engagement.
The landes beaches, whose reputation is not to be made, are a major attraction for the holiday makers as for the premises. The eight beaches of Capbreton allow you to fully enjoy the summer climate. The rest of the year, it is the surfers who make the animation of the littoral. The municipality welcomes annually several official surfing competitions.
On the leisure side, Capbreton delights young and old alike. On the harbor, we will have fun with the family in the attractions of the Island of Pirates. The biggest are found in the municipal casino, located on the seafront, and admire in passing its architecture strongly inspired by Gaudi. Golf enthusiasts enjoy a mini-course of 18 holes beautifully wooded (700 m distance on ½ hectare). And to finish the holidays, try the 1000m of karting tracks of the Gaillou, in mono or bi-place: strong sensations guaranteed! (Also karting for children)

Don't miss: "La Paillote du Lac", a superb restaurant on the edge of the lake of Hossegor, the setting is top and you will eat there more than well without ruining yourself. Next to the restaurant, you will be able to taste oysters direct from the producer accompanied by a small glass of wine. If you come on holiday in the area, you must go there to spend a nice evening (be careful not to arrive too late, places are rare).

For surfing lessons, many choices in Capbreton. But for bodyboard lessons, only one quality address: OGM Surf School, on the waterfront! Excellent service, for the equipment as well as for the supervision. Another strong point: access to the beaches via free and fast shuttle buses. As far as catering is concerned, a rotisserie/pizzeria is less than 2' walk away. Otherwise, very good restaurants in the town centre: "La Tétrade" or "Chez Ducamp" for seafood and "Le Jardin" for meat.

Seafood restaurant "L'Estacade": excellent. Outings: Espelette village to do absolutely; Biarritz with its beaches, aquarium, lighthouse and Virgin Rock; Bayonne; Bidart; and the proximity of Spain with Irun (with good shopping tips) and the beautiful city of San Sebastian.

Discovery of Capbreton very pleasant, however I would have appreciated it if someone had informed me that the whole city is equipped with cycle paths and that therefore, once the bike rental shop arrived, it was impossible to rent without a prior reservation!
