In the heart of Auvergne and Provence, the Ardèche has many faces, all of which have something in common : the pleasure of discovering them. Ideal for the practice of outdoor sports, the department is also a holiday resort that delights lovers of culture, art, old stones and gastronomy.
With its valleys, lakes, gorges, beautiful forests of chestnut trees, the Ardèche offers an incredible diversity of landscapes. It also offers you many ways to discover them. On foot, take the 6,000 kilometers of marked trails that crisscross the county, including the Dolce Via, an old railway line. By bike or mountain bike, you can cycle through the many itineraries (Via Rhôna, Voies Douces, Grande Traversée), which will allow you to enjoy magnificent panoramas of the Cévennes mountains, the vineyards... But also enjoy the pleasures of a canoe-kayak to admire the beauty of the gorges of the Ardeche and its fabulous sites like the natural arch near Vallon Pont d'Arc.
During your strolls in the department, make some stops to visit the beautiful cities of Ardeche. In Privas, the prefecture, you can admire the bridge over the Ouvèze (12th century), the Diane tower of Poitiers (15th), the superb Convent of the Récollets and the church of St. Thomas. In Annonay, the most populous city in the department, enjoy the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Maison La Vanaude, the Château de Déomas and the monuments dedicated to the Montgolfier brothers. But also make a getaway to Aubenas (castle, church), Joyeuse (medieval city, castle) and in many enchanting villages : Alba-la-Romaine, Balazuc, Chassiers, Grospierres, Labeaume, Salavas, Vinezac, Vogüé...
Many other moments of wonder await you in Ardeche. Among the must-see sites, you can admire the Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc, the source of the longest river in France, which culminates at 1551 meters and offers a fabulous panorama. In the natural park of the Monts d'Ardèche, let yourself be impressed by the cascade of the Ray Pic which flows from basalt organs over more than 10 meters. But also appreciate the wood of Païolive, the aven d'Orgnac and the replica of the Chauvet Grotto within the Cave of Pont-d'Arc. For lunch and dinner, discover other rejoicing opportunities by sampling the local recipes : cousina, creek, caillette, bombine, picodon, foudjou, chestnut cream...
