Caen is the capital of Calvados, in the Normandy region. A port city, Caen marvels at the splendor of its rich and marked heritage, which attracts many visitors every year. Developed mainly during the Middle Ages before being ravaged by the English, Caen found itself under the spotlight during the Second World War, of which it is still one of the most striking witnesses today. If there is one thing for which Caen is known, it is its memorial. Dedicated to the history of the 20th century and in particular to the Second World War, the D-Day Landings of June 1944 and the Battle of Normandy, the Caen Memorial is without doubt one of the most visited sites in the city. You will find interactive rooms, modern and fun exhibitions, perfect for young and old alike.
A real green lung of Caen, the Jardin des Plantes is an unmissable stop for all botany lovers! Planted with more than 8000 different species, this magnificent garden labeled "Jardin Botanique de France" since 1997 will transport you for a nature walk in the heart of the big city! A great city which also has a choice architectural heritage, of which artists, painters and authors have not been tired for centuries! What to see? The Men's Abbey (also called Saint-Etienne de Caen Abbey) built at the request of William the Conqueror (whose tomb it houses), and the Castle of Caen, also built under William the Conqueror. Located in the heart of the city center, this large fortress impresses by the size of its enclosure: with no less than 5.5 hectares, this castle is one of the largest in Europe, and also one of the best preserved since you can discover the remains of its dungeon, the governor's lodgings, but also the reconstitution of a medicinal garden of the Middle Ages, and many other splendid rooms! The building also houses the Fine Arts Museum and the Normandy Museum, two must-sees, rain or shine! Then take the time to wander around the Vaugueux district, the medieval district of Caen, which is as historical as you could wish and full of treasures to discover! Popular, made of old houses from the Middle Ages, half-timbered houses on cobbled streets, and small restaurants where it's good to sit down, it's the place not to be missed to take the pulse of Caen by day and by night! The 11th century Abbaye aux Dames is worth a visit, as well as the Escoville hotel, the port, and the numerous churches (which have earned Caen the nickname of "City of 100 steeples")... But if there is one thing that is not to be missed during any stay in Caen, it is the D-Day landing beaches. The beaches of Sword Beach in Ouistreham, Utah Beach in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, Juno Beach in Courseulles-sur-Mer, Gold Beach in Arromanches or Omaha Beach in Colleville-sur-Mer, are all sites full of history that you must see! Our advice? Take advantage of the seafront promenade in Ouistreham, lined with magnificent seaside villas, and climb the 171 steps of the Ouistreham lighthouse for a panoramic view of Caen and its port, the beaches and the sea! Hiking along the seaside, swimming and water sports activities in the English Channel will complete your vacation.
