It is two hours from Paris that are the long sandy beaches of Deauville. Deauville is a superb seaside resort very popular on the Côte Fleurie and is known worldwide for its elegance and pleasant living environment.
Start your stay with a stroll through the city : by strolling along its pretty open streets, you can admire the typical architecture of the region and do a little shopping in one of the many shops in the city centre. Just next to the Hippodrome de Deauville, a kilometre from the famous Planches, visit the Villa Strassburger and its picturesque architecture : classified as a historical monument, this imposing and shell-floral residence was the residence of Baron Henri de Rothschild. Built on the former property of Gustave Flaubert's family, this magnificent Anglo-Norman villa characteristic of the Belle Epoque can be visited from June to September. You will have the opportunity to discover its impressive volumes, its pretty sections of wood painted blue, its vast park, its apple trees and its underground, vestige of the Second World War.
In this wealthy city, villas from the Second Empire live alongside manors, chalets and other superb buildings, typical of the region. Added to this assumed Anglo-Norman style were the waves of Art Nouveau and Art Deco that swept over Deauville at the beginning of the 20th century. Witnesses of this renewal, La Poste, located rue du Robert Fossorier, and the magnificent Pompeian Baths along the promenade des Planches are not to be missed.
Built in 1923, the Planches and its cabins are one of Deauville's symbols. If their primary purpose was to allow women to walk along the beach without dirtying their dresses, they have become today one of the most fashionable places in the city, stretching along nearly 650 meters along the coast.
Facing the Planches, you will not be able to miss the 450 coloured parasols which decorate the beach of the "Six shot". Along this immense stretch of fine sand, you can relax under the Norman sun, sheltered by a pretty parasol. When summer comes and the sun is at its zenith, Deauville beach becomes a popular place for holidaymakers who hurry to cool off in the warm water of the English Channel. At low tide, you can even learn to sail a sand yacht or kite when the weather permits. Sports fans can exchange a few balls on one of the city's many tennis courts, swim lengths in the Olympic pool or perfect their swing on the golf greens of this pretty seaside resort.
Known throughout the world for its horse racing, Deauville hosts numerous equestrian competitions and events around the equine world every year. If you have the chance to stay there in September, don't miss the American Film Festival : created in 1975, it is the not-to-be-missed start of the film season during which you can attend the screening of many films. Finally, Deauville is also festive when night comes : when the city lights up, discos and casinos fill up. Casino Barrière is worth a visit, with its 300 slot machines, black Jack tables, three restaurants and Italian theatre.
