Porto, also known as Porto-Ota, is located in the department of Corse-du-Sud. At the bottom of the valley of the eponymous river, almost a kilometre from its mouth, the village of Porto is a real gem in the heart of Corsica. Halfway between Calvi and Ajaccio, it is the perfect place for a holiday between land and sea.
Ah, Porto... known for its gulf, reputed to be one of the most beautiful in the world, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Porto is one of the undisputed jewels of Corsica. A small seaside hamlet attached to the village of Ota, this human-sized destination offers tranquillity and dreamy landscapes to its lucky visitors. If the sea attracts irresistibly, the heart of the village is worth a small detour for the beauty of its buildings. If there is a star here, it is the Genoese Tower of Porto. Situated at the far end of the gulf, on a rocky promontory overlooking the mouth of the river Porto, this ancient watchtower has the particularity of being one of the only square towers on the island. Built during the 15th century, the tower, which has the appearance of a squat, fortified castle, offers incredible views from its promontory, magical at sunrise and sunset. Accessible after a short walk along a granite path, it is surrounded by dense, fragrant vegetation and prickly pear trees, making it a perfect postcard of Porto. After a coffee on the terrace and a stroll around the small port, you will head for THE reason why you will come to spend your holidays in Porto: the sea.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Gulf of Porto is a jewel, a treasure, from Piana and its creeks in the south to the Scandola reserve in the north. Here, the red granite contrasts with the incredible blue of the sea and the green of the maquis, offering to contemplate wild landscapes with shimmering colors. By walking through its small villages, or during sea excursions, you can discover the Gulf of Girolata and its confidential Tuara beach, the Scandola Nature Reserve, and the legendary calanques of Piana, a sumptuous group of rocks, needles and peaks of red granite that overhang the sea. Hikers will also be able to take advantage of the many walking trails in the Piana forest, Capu d'Ortu or even in Ota to discover the Genoese Pianella Bridge which poetically spans the river, while those who like to laze around will be able to swim in natural pools with turquoise water. With the family, the beach of Porto will be perfect for sunbathing or for swimming and dining at sunset facing the Gulf of Porto. Gourmet tastings, a visit to the Porto aquarium, leisurely or sporty strolls along its eucalyptus forest and coastline, scuba diving, snorkeling and canoeing will make your holiday in Porto memorable.
