Rocked by the Vézère, the village of Le Bugue is both dynamic and full of charm. Its narrow streets, beautiful alleys and traditional stone houses located on the banks of the river give this picturesque city a sweetness of life unlike any other. Take the rue de Paris and the Grand Rue, and stroll through the Vieux Bugue to discover its old medieval houses, small restaurants and pretty boutiques. Renowned for its market for over 8 centuries, Le Bugue is undeniably the meeting place for gourmands and gourmets who meet every Tuesday in the town hall square to discover all the flavours of local products. Market gardeners, bakers, cheese makers or butchers, all generously fill their stalls with fresh and scented products. You can taste strawberries, melons, walnuts, truffles, honey, chestnuts, ceps, foie gras, cheeses, poultry and wines from the local vineyards that make this market famous. After shopping, take time to stroll along its streets, along its quays, to discover its rivers, waterfalls, ducks and carp.
A family destination, Le Bugue is home to two sites where young and old can spend pleasant moments. Le Bournat park is an original place : in the middle of a park of 8 hectares, is the reconstruction of a village of yesteryear. You will discover the trades, the customs of the Belle Époque, the flavours and legends that make Périgord a unique site rich in traditions. Horse-drawn carriage or boat rides, pen-writing workshops, carousel rides or meetings with ponies, donkeys, rabbits and farm animals that live in the park. Next door is the Périgord Noir aquarium : built over 27 years ago, it is the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe with over 6000 fish in its basins. In addition to this visit, you can play golf and agility courses in the park : perfect and fun activities for a family visit.
Rich in historical heritage dating back to prehistoric times, Le Bugue is home to the Bara-Bahau cave, one of the decorated caves in the Vézère valley dating from the Palaeolithic period. Here, along a wall of 100 metres, cave bears and prehistoric men have left traces of their passage with their drawings, claws and footprints. Cradle of European civilization, the Vézère Valley is also home to the famous Lascaux cave : located in the commune of Montignac, 35 kilometres from Le Bugue, this cave has upset our modern vision of prehistoric art and our origins. Majestic and monumental work, it fascinates and impresses young and old thanks to its rock ornaments and its immense Palaeolithic paintings. You will also have to go to the Proumeyssac abyss, 3 kilometres from Le Bugue : the largest cavity in the Périgord, it is dazzling thanks to its magnificent underground vault renowned for its walls decorated with a myriad of crystals. It also has a play area where young and old can do geological experiments and learn speleology.
As for sporting activities, Le Bugue and its surroundings are obviously crossed by countless hiking trails that will allow you to discover all the most beautiful corners of the Périgord to discover the chasms, castles (such as the Château de Joséphine Baker in Castelnaud-la-Chapelle), ponds, gardens (such as the gardens of Marqueyssac), medieval villages (Sarlat-la-Canéda) and green valleys. So on foot, several loops are popular with holidaymakers such as the Cingle loop or the Cabanes loop, while the cycle loops linking La Bugue to neighbouring villages will be perfect for a big bowl of air in the countryside. The amateurs of nautical activities will be able as for them to devote themselves to their favorite activities since the commune has two bases of canoe, allowing you to discover along the water and at the rhythm of the paddles, all the beauty of the valley of Vézère.
