Capital of the Médoc wine region, Pauillac is a star in the field of wine tourism. With 18 Grands Crus Classés to its credit, including Châteaux Latour, Lafite Rothschild and Mouton Rothschild, and close proximity to some of the Gironde's most famous seaside resorts, Pauillac is definitely the perfect place for a relaxing vacation. Halfway between the Pointe de Grave and Bordeaux, right on the Gironde estuary, known as the largest estuary in Europe, Pauillac offers many invitations to come and enjoy its charms. Rich in a very ancient history, the town has preserved many testimonies of its past that you can contemplate by taking the time to stroll along its streets. What to see? The church of Saint-Martin de Pauillac on Place du Maréchal Foch, the former presbytery which now houses the covered market, the monument to the Pauillacais on Place de Lattre de Tassigny, not forgetting the esplanade La Fayette where it is pleasant to stroll. The Marina is a must to discover, in the early morning when everything is quiet and you can enjoy the sunrise in peace! But the Grotte d'Artigues is also a must! Built in 1897 as a replica of the Lourdes grotto, it is overhung by a Virgin and is worth a visit for its original story: the story goes that in order to allow pilgrims to drink Lourdes water, Anne-Françoise Averous (who built the grotto) exchanged with the chaplain of Lourdes a barrel of her wine for a barrel filled with Lourdes water. A legend that you can discover by visiting this site!

Our advice? Don't miss the D2, the famous and unavoidable "Route des Vins" which crosses the vineyard and will allow you to discover the unique beauty of the architecture of the Médoc castles! A perfect itinerary to do by bike, or on foot for the bravest of you. Please note that most of the chateaux can be visited, host art exhibitions or museums, and offer tastings for wine lovers.

But the other asset that Pauillac has up its sleeve is its ideal location in the heart of the Marine Natural Park of the Gironde Estuary and the Regional Natural Park of the Médoc. Also, take the time to get lost in the reed beds to discover the "carrelets" (small fishing boats) along the estuary! For swimming, you will have to go a little further north, either to the wonderful Lake of Hourtin, perfect for water activities, or to the Verdon-sur-Mer !
