Capital of Balagne to the north-west of the precious island of Beauty, Calvi, Genoese city, stands out as one of the most beautiful destinations of Corsica thanks to its magnificent panoramas and its architecture marked by the seal of history. Cultural, summery and festive, it seduces by its living environment, its generous sun and its superb beaches.
With its old citadel overlooking a huge bay bordered by beaches and pine forests for more than 6 kilometres, Calvi is one of the most pleasant seaside resorts in Corsica. Between sea and mountain, Calvi offers its visitors the choice between panoramas on the Monte Cinto massif and landscapes made of fine sand and turquoise water. For a panoramic point of view on Calvi, the ideal is to begin your stay with a discovery of its citadel. Proudly dominating the Mediterranean from its thick ramparts, this citadel is made of winding paid alleys and beautiful Genoese buildings. Built from 1483 to 1492, it is like a jewel on the waves of the great blue. We advise you to walk around the ramparts in order to embrace all the most beautiful views of the citadel on the port of Calvi and its surroundings. If there is one building to visit, it is the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist : built in the thirteenth century, it was destroyed and then rebuilt many times over the centuries, but contains in its heart beautiful treasures including a very beautiful wooden altarpiece. Among the cultural jewels of Calvi, do not miss the chapel of Our Lady of the Serra : built in the 15th century, it is recognizable thanks to its large white sculpture of the Virgin Mary, standing facing the city as a protective mother. If the chapel is very beautiful, the place is especially known to be one of the most beautiful panoramas of Calvi, with exceptional points of view on its gulf, the mountains flowing into the sea and the citadel : a spectacle that you will have difficulty leaving ! However, you will have to go back down into the heart of the citadel to take the rue Clémenceau, Calvi's lung with its narrow passages, its colourful and fragrant shops that give the city that sweet Mediterranean scent. At the end of the street, on the main square, you will not be able to pass next to the church Sainte-Marie-Majeure which attracts the glance thanks to its pink and white facade. Behind this church, a covered market is held every morning where local producers and craftsmen come to offer their products, to the delight of gourmets. On the menu : fruits, vegetables, farm cheeses and local wines, to delight all gourmands. The place lends itself perfectly to a break in a café in the shade of parasols that dot the square in front of the church, before setting out again more beautifully to discover the most beautiful sites of Calvi. At the foot of the citadel rock is the port of Calvi, where small fishing boats mingle with tourist boats and yachts. Facing the port, you will find numerous restaurants and bars : if they are perfect for a lunch break during the day, they are just as perfect for rather festive evenings. Facing the marina, the Salt Tower has stood for over 500 years : built in 1495, this imposing tower, formerly a lookout post where salt was once stored, is one of Calvi's symbols.
If there is one thing to do during your stay in Calvi, it is to enjoy the sea and its immense beaches of fine sand. There are 5 of them along the Calvi coast, spread over 5 kilometres. After having made the tour of the port, it will only take you a few steps to put your towel on some of the most beautiful beaches of Corsica. The "Plage de la Pinède" is the most famous : bordered by a wood going from the port of Calvi to Lumio, it is the most visited beach of the seaside resort. It also has many water sports clubs that will allow you to enjoy your favourite sliding activities, from sailing to jet skiing, surfing, kitesurfing, paddle, inflatable buoys and wakeboarding. You will also be able to initiate you with the scuba diving to discover the clear and fishy waters of Calvi, absolutely splendid. In the centre, the "Plage du Roncu" is more confidential : located at the tip of Saint-François, it is frequented mostly by the Calvais. Rocks, generous vegetation, transparent and sparkling water... The setting is perfect for the little ones to learn to swim in peace. Nestled behind the tip of the same name, the "Beach of Oscelluccia" is the quietest of all Calvi. Composed of small gravel, its almost desert setting gives it a small air of paradise on Earth. Just below, in the Gulf of Revellata, the "Alga Beach" offers an absolutely superb wild setting, perfect for relaxing and swimming in its transparent waters.
Finally, hiking and cycling will be the best way for you to discover the beauty of Balagne : in all, there are more than 250 kilometres of paths that will allow you to meet through the hills, mountains and coastal paths, goats, sheep, olive trees, vineyards, almond trees and views over the great blue that make up the Calvi region.
