Colombiers is located in the Hérault department, in the Occitanie region. Bathed by the sun's rays that caress its river port nestled on the banks of the Canal du Midi, Colombiers is a charming town where life is particularly pleasant in winter and summer. Located 8 kilometers from Béziers, this quiet town's history goes back to ancient times. Widely developed during Antiquity, in the heart of the plain along the Domitian Way, Colombiers became a fortified castrum during the Middle Ages before being established as a seigniory. Between the Mediterranean Sea and the first foothills of the Cevennes, this Languedoc commune is a must to discover on the Canal du Midi. As far as the built heritage is concerned, we recommend you to start your visit with a small detour to the church of Saint-Sylvestre-et-Sainte-Colombe. Dating from the 5th century, it is astonishing with its Visigothic altar, its 19th century stained glass windows, its medieval paintings and its ancient sarcophagi. Also worth seeing? The oppidum of Ensérune, an archeological site that reveals the ruins of an ancient village, but also in a completely different register the cellar of the castle, which is worth a visit for its framework inspired by the hull of an overturned boat.
On the nature side, it is impossible not to stop at the old pond of Montady: classified since 1974, this pond, drained in the Middle Ages, is a place of walk adored by the visitors for the unique beauty of its scrubland and its wild orchids. We also recommend that you observe it from the Montady tower, the current remnant of the old 12th century castle, as well as from the hill of the Ensérune oppidum. The other local star is of course the river port. One of the few still in use, it is located on the "grand bief" of the Canal du Midi, which links Toulouse to the Mediterranean. Also, take the time to stroll along its quays where bakeries, grocery stores and restaurants give rhythm to the life of this picturesque port. Masterpiece, the Canal du Midi is also classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and navigation is free from April to October. You will be able, according to your desires, to embark on small strolls on the canal to discover its locks and its most beautiful landscapes! A canal that can also be cycled along, for the bravest among you! Fishing, hiking on the old Domitian Way which goes down from Malpas and skirts the whole village, mountain biking, excursions in the direction of Béziers and swimming and water activities by the sea from the beaches of Vendres and Valras-Plage (20 minutes away) will be on the program of this stay in Colombiers.
