38 kilometres from Saint-Étienne, and a few steps from the Puy-de-Dôme, Saint-Bonnet-le-Château is a real postcard. Historic, cultural and open to nature, this charming town has all the cards in hand to seduce holidaymakers in search of original and exotic interludes.

In the Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Saint-Bonnet-le-Château is nicknamed the "Pearl of Forez". Small city of character, perched on its large promontory, Saint-Bonnet is a break in the heart of history. It is so good to stroll in the heart of its old medieval quarter as if frozen in time. Here, in the heart of this former county castle, you will discover the remains of a fortified wall, as well as cobbled streets lined with high middle-class houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, which tell the story of the village with their old stones, which once saw gunsmiths, locksmiths and weavers. The alleys are full of history and climb relentlessly towards the jewel of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château: its Collegiate Church. The Collegiate Church of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château is open to the public during the holidays and has been listed as a historical monument since 1922. Built at the beginning of the 15th century, it reveals in its lower chapel original wall paintings, as well as many treasures of the medieval period. Its ancient library, its mummy vault and its frescoes make it a must-see! But beyond its undeniable historical and cultural side, if this Gothic Collegiate Church is worth the detour, it is also for the exceptional panoramas that it allows you to discover on the Forez plain up to the Massif Central, the Alps and the Pilat. When you come down from the Collegiate Church, you cannot miss the many private mansions that dot the town, vestiges of the medieval and Renaissance periods. Worth seeing? The mansions and houses of the rue Dessous-des-Remparts, but also the mansions of the rue Châtelaine, the 15th century houses of the place Julliard, the Bouchetal mansion, the magnificent Valeyre house located on the place du Grand-Faubourg, the place des Fours-Banaux, without forgetting the gates that pierced the ancient ramparts, such as the Porte Baume, the Porte Mandrin or the Porte de la Châtelaine.

The little extra thing about Saint-Bonnet-le-Château? The town, nestled in the heart of the Monts du Forez, is the historical cradle of the "OBUT" petanque ball appreciated by connoisseurs. So here's to you and your family playing pétanque! Curious and unconditional fans of this sport will be able to visit the International Museum Pétanque and Boules, to know everything about its history. If you prefer walking or mountain biking to pétanque, there are a number of paths to discover the splendour of the village and its neighbouring towns. Our advice? Montmarcher is worth a visit for its breathtaking panorama at an altitude of 1162 metres, as is the artists' village of Marols. The basaltic Organs of the Montpeloux volcano 22 kilometres further west, but also the Castle and the volerie of Rochebaron, the astonishing Castle of Cornillon, or the magnificent Castle of Grangent lodged on the Loire are all sites in the area of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château (less than 30 kilometres away) which we recommend you to visit
