It is in the department of the Lot, in the Occitan region, that the commune of Cazals is located. Just a few kilometres from the border with the Dordogne, 13 kilometres from Villefranche-du-Périgord, 30 kilometres from Cahors and Sarlat-la-Canéda, and about thirty minutes from the Regional Natural Park of the Causses du Quercy, Cazals enjoys an ideal location for discovering the history of the region, between marked gastronomy, magnificent caves and remarkable heritage.
Between the valleys of the Dordogne and the Lot, Cazals has everything to please holidaymakers in search of authenticity. In the heart of the Bouriane region, known to hikers for its lush green hills and valleys perfect for trekking and quiet excursions, Cazals is definitely the perfect place to put down your suitcases and enjoy all the benefits of nature, abundant and unspoilt. Cazals has a rich and fascinating history, dating back to Prehistoric times, then to Antiquity, before developing in the 14th century with the establishment of a commercial town with a reputation in the area. So, to discover all its assets, take the time to visit the historic heart of the village. As you wander through its narrow streets, its entire history will jump out at you. Pass by the church Notre-Dame de Ginolhac built in the 19th century on the ruins of an old Romanesque chapel, then discover the superb 14th century castle built in place of an old 11th century castrum. You will be able to admire its walls, its moats, its wide gate and its square tower which constitute its defensive arsenal, but also two main buildings and an original Romanesque tower. The Perboyre chapel and its splendid 16th century sundial, but also the magnificent hotels of the Judge Laveur and Salviac de Vielcastel will complete your discovery of the local heritage. In addition, you can also visit the Atelier-Musée des Vieilles Mécaniques (Old Mechanics Workshop-Museum) which will plunge you into the heart of the country's industrial history, where you will meet the steam engines, tractors and other machines that enabled the development of trade and transport between 1930 and 1970. The Mecanic Art Museum will complete your visit with its works perfectly illustrating this modern era rich in innovations.
The other asset of Cazals is obviously its dynamism. A real paradise for nature and outdoor sports enthusiasts, the town has several hiking trails for pedestrians, but also a whole host of signposted loops for mountain bikers. Via the old paths of the Way of St. James of Compostela, and the itineraries criss-crossing the Bouriane region, you can discover some of its most beautiful castles, such as Lantis, Montcléra, Lavercantière and many others, but also the washhouses, dovecotes, gariottes and bread ovens, which bear witness to the history of the area. La Cayre's lake is perfect for a bubble in the sun or a short pedal boat ride on the lake, or for a family fishing trip. A little further on, the charming medieval town of Gourdon is worth a visit, as are the splendid prehistoric caves of Cougnac, Cahors and its vineyards, and the Valentré bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the bastide town of Villefranche-du-Périgord (13 kilometres away) but also the medieval village of Domme, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Rocamadour la gourmande, the Padirac chasm and the Pech-Merle caves... So many places that will complete your stay in Cazals.
