Ready for a relaxing, exotic and sporting holiday in a natural setting of preserved and unique beauty ? Head for Le Palais, capital of Belle-Île-en-Mer, an island adored by Morbihan lovers and its unique landscapes. A commercial, fishing and pleasure port, Le Palais is also a renowned seaside resort and the ideal place to settle down and visit Belle-Île. And if the song "Belle-Île-en-Mer, Marie-Galante, Saint-Vincent..." stays in your head when you read this article, know that the landscapes of this magnificent island are not ready to leave your memory either.
Born at the end of the 16th century at the request of Charles IX, the Palace shelters a strong natural but also architectural heritage, in the image of its citadel built by Vauban. Classified as a Historic Monument, it is the most visited site in the commune : this former royal fort dominating the port of the town comprises several interesting buildings, including a former powder magazine which today hosts concerts and exhibitions. The walls of the Palace are also listed as Historic Monuments : its museums and landscaped walkway dotted with acacias, willows and chestnut trees make it an ideal place for strolling. Visit the fortifications of the citadel, take the time to observe the view from the belvedere of the rue des Remparts, visit the casemates, the reduced and the fortified gates like the Bangor gate and the Vauban gate. During your strolls, pass by the ruins of the castle Fouquet, visit the shopping streets of the city to discover its galleries of artists and stop for a few moments at the church Saint-Géran : with its granite stones, its mosaics, its statues and its stained glass windows, it is one of the most beautiful monuments of the Palace. Continue your peregrinations in the direction of the port of the town : with its harbour master's office, its old houses and its maritime station, the port of the Palace is adored by boaters.
An extremely popular hiking spot for walkers, Belle Île en Mer can boast over 82 kilometres of coastal paths (the GR 340) : here, hikers are definitely in the right place ! On foot or by bike, many loops will allow amateur and experienced hikers to contemplate sea landscapes with shimmering colours, sparkling light and iodized scents. Between Le Palais and Sauzon, you will discover nearly 20 kilometres of turquoise water coves and colourful houses facing the sea, to finish your excursion by contemplating one of the most beautiful sites on the island : the Pointe des Poulains. From this rocky spur of magnificent beauty, you can even observe the island of Groix and the bay of Quiberon on a clear day.
From islets to caves and from cliffs to coves of fine sand, the serrated coastline of the Palace promises its visitors moments of calm and serenity, all in a dream setting. If the beaches of the Palais are not the largest on Belle-Île, they are surely the most intimate. Surrounded by coves and superb caves, the "Ramonet Beach" is the most popular beach of the seaside resort. Very sunny, it is also often attacked by holidaymakers. Climb up to the point of Ramonet, on the right, to see there in addition to the eponymous fort a magnificent panorama on the citadel, the port, Quiberon and the island of Houat. Sheltered from the wind, this beach is appreciated by families for its warm waters and its preserved setting. Sheltered from the winds and the swell, the "Crique de Port Saint-Julien" is ideal for quiet parentheses : accessible by a steep staircase and surrounded by cliffs and tamarisk, it is very little frequented, to the delight of holidaymakers looking for quiet little corners. For moments of idleness far from the crowd in an idyllic setting, take the direction of the "Crique des Canons" : its crystal clear turquoise water makes it one of the most beautiful in the Palace. Difficult to access and visible only from the sea, the lucky few to know its existence will be able to enjoy its paradisiacal setting in all serenity. Kayaking and boating enthusiasts will head to "Port Fouquet Beach", while scuba divers can head to "Port York" and "Big Rock" beaches. Finally, you can also surf, experience your first catamaran trip, windsurf, or even rent motor boats for a tour of Belle-Île or discover the islands of Groix, Hoëdic and Houat.
I recommend the restaurant "L'Atrium".... excellent value for money.
