Baixas (pronounce "Bachas") is above all a village steeped in history. Just a stone's throw from Perpignan, this picturesque village in the Catalan hinterland impresses with its rich and ancient heritage, which you will discover as you visit. This ancient fortified town, with its wine-growing tradition above all, still has 5 wide entrance gates, 9 high watchtowers and a cellera, a sacred place around the church. Very old, the medieval village of Baixas established during the 10th century is one of the oldest in the whole of Roussillon. From its maze of ancient alleys emanates an almost palpable charm, alleys enhanced by its famous bluish-grey marble that adorns many monuments in the region. Its most beautiful work is certainly its church: located in the Old Centre, the church of Sainte-Marie of Catalan Gothic architecture is as famous for its imposing exterior architecture as it is for the treasure it contains, the altarpiece of the High Altar sculpted by Louis Génères and painted in gold by François Monader, of fascinating beauty and monumental size (17 metres high and a little over 12 metres wide). Along its interlaced alleys, it is all the beauty of this village steeped in history that will be offered to you, according to its fountains, its wooded squares, its doors and its vaulted passages that give it a crazy cachet. The Château des Pins is worth seeing, as are the cellars that produce the famous Muscat de Rivesaltes, which will not fail to delight lovers of this alcohol so prized in the summer months. In fine weather, many galleries open their doors to allow visitors to discover the talent of local craftsmen. Painters, sculptors, photographers and other artists will not fail to charm the culture lovers who will have chosen Baixas as their home for a stay under the sun.

If you are more of a hiking and sports enthusiast, put on your trainers and walk through the fragrant garrigue and generous vineyards that surround Baixas. To the north-west of the town, the Ermitage Sainte-Catherine is worth seeing, as is Perpignan and its historic centre, which you can easily reach on foot if you like walking, but also by mountain bike or car. Finally, it would be a pity not to take advantage of the proximity of the Mediterranean Sea, which is only about 20 kilometres from Baixas! From the magnificent beaches of Torreilles, Sainte-Marie-la-Mer or Canet-en-Roussillon, you will be able to bubble under the sun, bathe, and practice a whole range of water activities according to your desires (surfing, paddle, diving, aquatic brand, water skiing, sailing, sea outings...).
