The main town of the Côte de Lumière, in the Center-Ouest of France, Les Sables-d'Olonne leaves no one indifferent. This coastal town has become famous by hosting the Vendée Globe every four years. This sailing race, around the world, alone, without a stopover, is one of the most difficult in the world. The Vendée Globe reflects well the state of mind that prevails in this corner of Vendée : a vision of the world fighting and close to nature.
It is this stubbornness that has led the inhabitants of the region to build with their own hands, stone by stone, the multiple monuments that adorn the city center. The abbey of Sainte-Croix now houses the municipal museum. This 17th century building is the receptacle of prestigious collections of modern and contemporary art, with artists such as Dubuffet, Combas, Hortala and Marquet. In the attic room, you will discover the permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the sea bathing and the fishing port.
This inescapable place of the local culture is not the only museum of Sables-d'Olonne. The municipality also has a museum of popular traditions, housed in a former school, and a museum of shellfish. This unusual place hosts tropical shells from around the world.
Another must-see is the Île-d'Olonne saltmakers, salt marshes that can be visited all summer long. On the sea side, you will have access to a wide range of activities, including surfing, catamaran sailing, jet skiing, diving and kitesurfing. Finally, do not forget to take a tour on the Penotte Island. Stuck between the port and the beach, this neighborhood is made up of an interlacing of small streets called "venelles". Rue Trompeuse, rue des Corderies or rue des Bains : names that invite you to travel. So, let yourself be tempted !

We had a good week, in spite of the compulsory wearing of the mask, (October 2020 - Covid pandemic), but parking was difficult (free parking but because of the Vendée Globes race suddenly became chargeable).

I recommend the Sauveterre Riding Centre and the nearby wilderness coast for horseback riding enthusiasts. At low tide the beach is wonderful, and if you are a dog owner, please note that dogs are allowed. There is also the beach of Veillon which is beautiful with its small lagoons, there is something to eat if you want to spend the day there, paid parking if no space outside. There is a rather typical restaurant also, it is necessary to go there at least once it is "La Sainte Émilienne" in Olonnes sur Mer, impossible to find this restaurant alone ! it is in the pampas !

I recommend a visit to St Gilles Croix de Vie (beach, port, town centre and coast towards Saint hilaire de Riez). To go out in the evening there is the casino of the pines, the atmosphere is great.
