The town of Luçon is located in the Vendée department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Spiritual capital of the Bas-Poitou, former bishopric of Cardinal de Richelieu, Luçon is a stronghold, loved as much for its strategic location as for its splendid heritage. There are many things to see when you are in Luçon! An episcopal city, Luçon has always been a place of residence and holiday resort appreciated by good society, as evidenced by its beautiful houses, topped with slate roofs, and some amazing buildings with a medieval look, decorated with gargoyles and towers. The Maison Dumaine (now the town hall) is a must-see, as are the Rorthais de Marmende and Choyau hotels, both listed as Historic Monuments, not forgetting the Serin de Lénardière and Chabot de Thénies town houses, and the Château de Mille-Souris, a wealthy residence recognisable by its wide baroque door, inspired by the cathedral. Ah, the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption cathedral of Luçon, how beautiful it is, it is one of the most beautiful jewels of the city! Also listed, this imposing Gothic building located on the Place Richelieu is a must-see for your visit because of the splendour of its decorations and its glorious past. Its magnificent 16th century cloister is a must-see, as is the Sainte-Ursule chapel for its painted ceiling, the 12th century Episcopal Palace of Luçon, the Ursuline Convent on Georges Clémenceau Street, the Richelieu College and the Carmel Convent on Union Chrétienne Street. Take the time to visit the Hoche district, the Halles district, the Guifettes lake, the old cemetery created during the Revolution, the Bourgneuf district between the cathedral and the old river port, not forgetting the Hôtel de Ville district, famous for its Dumaine Garden (one of the most beautiful gardens in France) planted with exceptional trees, and full of treasures
In the heart of the great Vendée plain, in the Vendée Bocage and right on the edge of the Marais Poitevin, Luçon is one of the gateways to the Côte de Lumière, known for being home to some of the country's most beautiful seaside resorts such as Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, Saint-Jean-de-Monts, Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Les Sables-d'Olonne, to name but a few. For swimming, you should head for La Faute-sur-Mer, which has many beaches (such as the Barrique beach and the Beluga beach), which are perfect for water sports activities such as kitesurfing, sailing, paddle boarding and surfing, as well as for relaxing in the sun and walking along the seafront. Hiking in the marshes surrounding Luçon, fishing, mountain biking and other outdoor activities will complete this stay in the Vendée.
