Well-known for the fans of the Atlantic Ocean, Saint-Hilaire de Riez is located on the Côte de Lumière in the Vendée. This ocean-lit coastal area hosts some of the most famous seaside resorts in the region, including Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and Les Sables-d'Olonne. This means that Saint-Hilaire de Riez is a popular destination for tourists. Yet, this destination has retained its charm and originality.
The city's coat of arms reflects the natural landscape that surrounds it : it has gold and azure tones that recall the color of the sky and the sandy beaches. With more than 10 km of beach, Saint-Hilaire de Riez has the longest Atlantic facade of the department of Vendée.
You can also discover the famous salt marshes that are populated by a particular flora : pierce stone, sea crist, sea bean, sea pickle... The inhabitants of salt marshes will also know you will be surprised, especially with the elegant avocet, a small wader with black and white plumage familiar with wetlands.
This apparent tranquility should not make us forget that the sector had previously a military vocation. The presence of Villa Grosse Terre, whose first mention goes back to the Napoleonic cadastre of 1832, testifies to this dense past. Today the property belongs to the municipality and has been completely renovated. You can visit its gardens, stroll along the coastal path that extends the pedestrian paths of the Vendée Corniche and admire the view from the belvedere.
Another vestige of this abundant history, the battlefield of the Mathes. Perched on the promontory of the ancient island of Rie, this place of memory dates from the battle between Louis XIII and the protestants of Soubise in the marsh of Rié. The site is located not far from the nautical base of Sion, where catamarans, kayaks and windsurfing cohabit for the greatest pleasure of the holidaymakers.

In Saint Jean de Monts there are all the shops (3 kilometres away). If you want to buy fish, shellfish and crustaceans, we recommend the "Marée Montoise", near the church.

Especially book in advance for any activity (boat crossing to Yeu Island: we have not found anything available anymore). Difficult during the covid to recommend a restaurant: there is a lot of choice, really. If you go further, towards Saint Nazaire, book any visit for the submarine or the Atlantic Paquebots visit as there is no room when going directly.

On the beach of Les Becs, go to the beach bar "Le Bécot", you will find quality products at low prices and a super nice atmosphere. Go to "Beau Land Park" to ride a merry-go-round or eat a burger. Go and see the "Trou du Diable" on the Vendée coast road (beware if you go down on the beach just next door: they are mainly stones but it's very pretty). Stroll in Saint Gilles Croix de Vie or on the island of Noirmoutier. Do the markets: they are great, you will find local products, crafts and very nice traders.

Atlantic Toboggan just next door on foot, the craft market of St Jean de Monts on Wednesday mornings at 7kms, the Trou du Diable at St Gilles Croix de Vie at 4kms, the big beach of Petit Sochard near the Hippodrome at St jean de Monts (which accepts dogs): ideal if you hate the crowd and if you want to enjoy swimming with your dog!
